How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

And there we have it, right on cue.

Yes I argued for and voted for brexit, as was my absolute democratic right and on reflection I was wrong. I argued even more vehemently for brexit too happen when many wanted the result of the referendum ignored and for that I will never apologise because to have done that would have been a disgrace.

What you think of me personally is if so little consequence it barely registers. What you have to get used to though is the fact my vote and that of every single other person out there matters just as much as yours does and sometimes, you will be in a minority and you won’t get the outcome you would like.

With brexit it all got a tad too personal and even to this day, some just won’t let go and I include yourself in that.

You demand democracy but only on your own terms and it does not work like that I’m afraid.

Isn't that what Brexit was about?

The rabble have now gone off to form that Conservative fringe group and are ranting about 16 year olds getting the vote and PR.

If it was "fully democratic" we would have given settled residents who weren't citizens the vote on the referendum too. Which would have swung it back in favour of remain, although maybe not with weirdos like Gisela Stuart on Vote Leave.

I don’t know what consolation it is but as one of the more stolid lefties you’ll meet I don’t blame you or anybody else who voted for Brexit.

I only voted remain somewhat last minute because after doing a tonne of research I realised that my understanding of the mechanisms of the EU was sufficiently lacking. I concluded that neither I nor any member of the general electorate can possibly be expected to understand the true consequences of such a decision. And so I voted for the status quo.

There are times when a plebiscite is needed. Voting system reform arguably being one. But there’s a reason we have a representative democracy rather than a direct democracy, and that’s because it’s a full time job to understand how a lot of these political systems work. There’s a reason we don’t put things like capital punishment to referendum. If a topic is sufficiently complex, people will often vote against their best interests without understanding all the ramifications. If our society has strong enough protections against misinformation it might be okay, but at present we don’t.

The blame lies solely on those who sought to put a wedge in society and bring something like this to a public vote. And for those who should know better but lied to the public to serve their best interests. I’ll never once blame the people that exercised their democratic right, as frustrating as I find their decision making.

Another complete load of bollocks.
