How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

Lol. He or she does but doesn’t think they benefitted from the government paying towards our leccy bills. Short or selective memories some folks mate
So they subsidised my leccy bill? A direct debit comes out for it so I don't think about the amount; unless they've clearly taken the piss. To answer your question let's go with "just right".

Still unsure as to the relevance of your question?

Spanish people go on holiday in Spain and ruin an 81 yo womans holiday IN SPAIN - the thoughtless bastards.

If you ever wondered why it happened here its English exceptionalism laid bare

Your argument was that you were not selectively principled. The very fact you think the funding was “just right” demonstrates you are.

Let me explain why, our government supported us when energy prices where high, this allowed us to continue to use energy at the same rate as before without having to worry about the extra cost. This contrasts to citizens of poorer countries whose government could not subsidise their energy consumption- they were left unable to use the same amount of energy as before - some countries were borderline bankrupt because of it. What should have happened is we reduced our consumption to a level we could afford - this would have reduced demand which reduces prices.

So to parrot your example: high global energy prices? Pfft, they're not my compatriots. I’ll keep charging my phones etc without worrying about the cost or how they might pay for energy.

This isn’t a dig at you, it simply demonstrates that even if we think we are being consistent in our principles, we aren’t, it’s a hard hill to stand on. I find the whole stance of the left on this topic rather duplicitous - socialism stops at our borders.

If the government had thought ahead and built the necessary power stations and kept storage facilities, we wouldn’t have had to have our bills subsidised as we wouldn’t have been buying as much from the market whilst the prices were so high.

There’s a distinction between being self sufficient, where possible, and socialism though.

I suppose it depends what fuel they use - were it gas powered leccy would have still gone up

I was meaning more nuclear really, along with R&D into tidal energy.

Thats the weird one. We are an Island and I can buy an almanac that will tell me the high and low tides all next year - how we don't utilise tidal is beyond me. I think there is a liking for big shiny projects but simply installing something in the harbours of say Whitby and Padstow for example could take them off the grid for a number of hours twice a day. Then repeat around the country and you can probably halve power consumption

Exactly. We could actually be world leading at something too had we developed the technology and sold it around the world, whilst lowering all our electricity bills.
