Your argument was that you were not selectively principled. The very fact you think the funding was “just right” demonstrates you are.
Let me explain why, our government supported us when energy prices where high, this allowed us to continue to use energy at the same rate as before without having to worry about the extra cost. This contrasts to citizens of poorer countries whose government could not subsidise their energy consumption- they were left unable to use the same amount of energy as before - some countries were borderline bankrupt because of it. What should have happened is we reduced our consumption to a level we could afford - this would have reduced demand which reduces prices.
So to parrot your example: high global energy prices? Pfft, they're not my compatriots. I’ll keep charging my phones etc without worrying about the cost or how they might pay for energy.
This isn’t a dig at you, it simply demonstrates that even if we think we are being consistent in our principles, we aren’t, it’s a hard hill to stand on. I find the whole stance of the left on this topic rather duplicitous - socialism stops at our borders.
