How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

Your argument was that you were not selectively principled. The very fact you think the funding was “just right” demonstrates you are.

Let me explain why, our government supported us when energy prices where high, this allowed us to continue to use energy at the same rate as before without having to worry about the extra cost. This contrasts to citizens of poorer countries whose government could not subsidise their energy consumption- they were left unable to use the same amount of energy as before - some countries were borderline bankrupt because of it. What should have happened is we reduced our consumption to a level we could afford - this would have reduced demand which reduces prices.

So to parrot your example: high global energy prices? Pfft, they're not my compatriots. I’ll keep charging my phones etc without worrying about the cost or how they might pay for energy.

This isn’t a dig at you, it simply demonstrates that even if we think we are being consistent in our principles, we aren’t, it’s a hard hill to stand on. I find the whole stance of the left on this topic rather duplicitous - socialism stops at our borders.
First of all, excellent post. I used the term "selectively principled" loosely. Yes, it's nigh on impossible to be consistent in our principles if we contextualise it infinitesimally. My overriding point was; it's remiss to spit venom (justifiably) at a government that commits corruption and public deception on a regular basis and then turn a blind eye to a cabal of gratuitous tax thieves. Looking at it simply, there will be many monarchists in this country who decry public sectors being ravaged financially and at once be happy to see one family lavished with palaces, acres of land, limitless capital without seeing a hint of irony or self-awareness in such sensibility.

I've seen it suggested the royal family have no power, but that's patently untrue. They exercise a form of soft power, in that they convince millions they are saintly and infallible through their public pantomime acts and affectations; in the eyes of many, they can do no wrong and should be liable to no accountability. And that's before we get into the tiny detail of them operating outside laws every other person in the UK has to adhere to. That's real power.

I'll stress again I consider myself centrist. I know socialism is an ideological pipedream; it's unworkable. Capitalism is ugly, but at the very least everyone has an opportunity to exploit it's ugliness by working hard. Hereditary monarchies, and my revulsion to them, has nothing to do with socialism and capitalism.

Anyway, I've made my point. Happy New Year. Happy New Year to all forum members; even the royalist cunts :) :)

Exactly. We could actually be world leading at something too had we developed the technology and sold it around the world, whilst lowering all our electricity bills.

Thing is I have always said that politicians like installing new street lights and filling in potholes rather than fixing leaking drains. Why? Photo ops. They can be pictured pointing at smooth roads are new lights but nothing comes from pointing at a manhole cover. Thats why the last tidal proposal across the Severn Estuary was vetoed - bad publicity - no more Severn Bore but the tidal reach down there has massive potential - all that free energy

Have any potholes been filled since 2010?

You are right though, photo ops and quick wins are favoured over long term strategy and foresight.

Well done fuck ends

This does bring us back to the question in the title though.

How do we recover from this? There won’t be another referendum before at least 2041 IMO, even if everyone in the country actually agreed it was a mistake.

Can we recover without rejoining? Or is this going to be the marker where we dropped out of the big boys club and become world middleweights like Italy or Canada.
