I doubt it would impact tourism as the very definition of tourist is someone visiting a place not someone seeking residency

There are multiple problems and you can't just ignore the physical aspect of the problem. So yeah I repeat, how do you physically build 1.2m people's worth of houses per year, year on year? We either increase supply or we slow demand, the former is probably impossible and the latter is something that Reform would come up with.

To reframe the question then should we have a specific tax on immigrants when they buy houses? Obviously that would be a stupid policy but that is precisely what the Spanish are doing and you chaps are cheering it on, purely because it attacks Brits... It's a bit sad.

Have you ever been to the South of Spain? That entire region is awash with houses built for expats, obviously for retirement type tourism because why else would anybody choose to live there?

If you were buying a £500k house in the south of Spain then would you buy it with a £500k tax on top? I absolutely would not, it will totally collapse the housing market in those areas because nobody will buy the houses and so less people will live there = reduced economy. Is a local resident going to buy a £500k holiday home? It seems unlikely.

But yes these sort of things are absolutely why we should rejoin the EU because provably as in this case some European politicians are really nice people with excellent ideas... If they want to empty the Costas over the winter and bankrupt local areas (and local residents) then this is a great start...

why would they be charged £500k if they already live there? Is this proposal retrospective?

Portugal is a surprise. they have been pushing for UK entrepreneur's to go set up new businesses there in the last couple of years. this kinda goes against that move.

Not really. They want entrepreneurs to go there and generate economic activity and pay their taxes there as residents.

But then have to pay 100% tax on a house you may buy when moving over to set a business up? its a counter intuitive move for them. try to appeal but then add more friction.

No, because they will secure residency when they move and setup a business. Would you buy a house as soon as you move or rent first and figure it all out?

Entrepreneurs aren't eligible to carry out work unless they have a visa that comes with residential status.

Not foreseeable at the time, but that’s actually the point.

The notion that cutting ourselves off from our liberal, stable neighbours wasn’t replete with recklessness is actually absurd. Of course it fucking was. A moron could appreciate this.
