How Do We Stop Turning into That Which We hate ?

Sadly I don't think we can. The whole attitude of the club/ fanbase changed last season and pretty much from the off the majority expected us to win the league.

Even some of the older posters on here were expecting us to win every game and win the league, and turned against the team when we lost, slating the players and calling for Mancini's head.

Seemed it was only a minority who were trying to remind people of where we've come from and how lucky we are to be in the position we're currently in.

I don't know how you avoid the arrogance,i see it on here already a lot, belittling clubs like Spurs,Everton,Aston villa, clubs which historically are on a par with us,as if they were nothing clubs,it is only our good fortune that has taken us ahead of them at this moment in time.

How did you type like that Martin? I reckon there is a clone of you.

I'd struggle phoning for a taxi after drinking that much :D

We can't force a thousand beatings on every new fan so they appreciate the wins that tad more. They will have their own experience of City - presumably that of a more positive City with more or less a guaranteed win.

We have always had Gloryseekers, my Aunt only started watching city in 1968, no coincidence - at a time when the club was a success.
She had no interest in it prior, even though her Dad went to games and so on.

LOL
You got me Ste....
Still sober and not cloned though there is a strange shadow in the corner.

My point is

After the years of success that are in front of us in maybe 10 years time our fan base will have changed.
The old guard will have faded away replaced by new fans brought up on trophy after trophy.
The dynamic of our fan base will have altered, they will believe its thier right to win everything in sight like the wretches just outside Manchester with all the arrogance and evil attitude to others we have put up with down the years.
My point is that we are better than that but how the hell do we as a fan base
avoid becoming that which we hate in arrogance to others ?

Have you considered that we're not actually "better than that", perhaps the humility (if you want to call it that) was more or less forced on us by the ongoing lack of success, especially compared to our rag neighbours? Maybe a degree of arrogance is the natural order of things for supporters of a successful club? Just throwing the idea into the mix.

I knew we were going down the pan when some posh c**t sat in front of me at the FA cup final obliviously hitting me in the face with his flag. I could sense the new breed mooching on in.

Seriously though I think there'll be enough of the old guard knocking around the Etihad and the aways for the considerable future. Inevitably new fans will replace old and but contrary to David Conns book, I don't think our ground is full of 40 odd year old blokes and hardly any young fans. I think we've got a decent number of the local younger generation coming to the games, ones who've grown up with us maybe not being crap (like us born in the 70's/80's) but definitely mediocre in comparison to the 'big clubs'.

Now we're one of these clubs and as success breeds success lets all enjoy it, old and new. While at the same time trying not to end up turning into c***s!

Well said, royle. OK to laugh at the rags after all the shit we've taken but not these other clubs.

In what way are we unique? Newcastle fans come up with all that shite and it's exactly that - shite. Do you think we have the only fans who are witty, like a laugh and a drink at away games? When Newcastle fans say 'you have to be from the area to understand the club, how unique the fans are', it's complete bollocks. All football fans of all clubs are the same. Successful clubs have that element of glory hunting fans too, it's to be expected. Thing is though as long as that original fan base remains then there's no problem. I'd rather be successful, have the fans who we already have AND a load of new ones than be unsuccessful and only have those fans who were here anyway.

It's a tough one but I reckon we'll steer a middle course. It is inevitable that we are going to attract a number of new fans and it is incumbent upon the long standing City fans to not let the overall identity of the supporters be hijacked by these newbies.

I think a combination of ongoing vigilance and a determination for the identity of the supporters not to mirror those at united will limit any assault on the existing collective identity of City fans.

It will not be humanly possible for our change in circumstance not to change the identity of our supporters to some extent, but it was always thus. I noticed a discernible change in the disposition of blues between the late 70's and the mid 90's, for example. How could that not be the case?

I agree with what was posted earlier about some posters looking down their noses at Villa, Everton, Spurs etc. This was precisely the type of attitude I used to despise when I was on the receiving end. The are all great clubs with great history (not in terms of the shallow trophy winning definition) and tradition, just as we are and always were, and they should be respected as such.

Might be to intellectual a question for some on here

Discussed this with Blues recently and most far brighter than me, it pans out this way.

We are unique as a fan base down the years, bright ,witty and all out for a good time, an away match was a collective craic for everyone.
Even now songs that are beyond anything constructed by other teams fans,we leave everyone standing in our collective humour and intelligence.

But
In years to come the line in our fan base is drawn to post and Pre Glory years.

Pre Glory is awareness of who we are and where we came from with all the joy and sadness. The wit and reparptee, the dont give a f..k attitude.

Post Glory and I guess many many years of trophy winning all the sadness and joy we had at small success is forgotten.

The new fans we will attract in time will outnumber those of us today and all brought up on trophy after trophy my fear is that we will mirrer image that which we hate.
Is it inevitable ?

My fear is that it is

We will have gained but also lost a vital part of who we as a fan base are.

Maybe we need a Blue Rawk to instruct new blues the legacy passed down and that new fans understand we are different from all others, we are unique as a fan base and always will be but that depends on you and me.

Any suggestions ?
.

Couple of things which might be controversial... I actually don't agree with the songs being new and original and better than anything out there... we have one song!! One song... Blue Moon... and that's it!! And we nicked that off Crewe.

Yes, we have the invisible man.... fair enough! The Balotelli one, the words are original but Liverpool were using the same tune a while back. We've even nicked the This is how it feels to be City off Manure...

... and here's the thing... in my mind, both Liverpool and Manure have been coming out with original songs for years... using popular themes and tunes but with their own lyrics... pro-Liverpool, anti-City... whatever... But I actually think we've been crap at coming up with songs... proper songs, not like the Edin Dzeko chant which is class... but proper songs like 'my old man' etc...

We need to sort it out.

In terms of the 'new' fan.... London matches have been full of 'new' fans or at least unfamiliar faces for years...

We will grow our fanbase, it's undoubted... but think about the home matches, we've sold out 36,000 season tickets... these are more likely to be Manchester based in the main regular season ticket holders who have renewed...

So, at home matches, it should still be the same old crowd, irrespective of how popular we become, until at least we expand the ground. The away matches, due to the points system SHOULD be the same but London matches are slightly different.

In all, irrespective of how many Facebook fans we have or new fans coming on board due to our (continued) success... actually going to a match should still be the same as it ever was.

We need to stop obsessing about turning into rags.

We're not and we never will be.

Taking the piss every now and then, having a laugh, being confident in our club and players is not raggish behaviour no matter how desperate people are to link us to them.
