How do you assess our transfer business?

Torres over Sane - big improvement from last season as Sane didn’t play.

Dias over Otamendi and Ake too. We’ve objectively strengthened and if we signed a left back it would’ve been a class window.

City's academy has been able to compete for the very best elite-level young talent for a number of seasons now, and that means a number of 'graduating' players now in their late teens offer potential at least equivalent to some of the "new toy" players who have enjoyed an eyecatching initial breakthrough season at a less-competitive club. This window has addressed some essential business, but still leaves an aspirational pathway for some of the academy's brightest prospects to stake a claim at first team level. That's something I've been wanting to see for a while now. You can't just buy externally for every berth that needs filling if the academy is to remain a draw for elite-level young talent.

I think we’ve done the bare minimum needed this summer to keep us competitive because we don’t know Pep’s plans. If we click and he decides that the players are responding so he extends then we might dip our toes into the market in the January window.

Fair point, I hadn't considered that

A decent window but feels like a further season of transition from Silva/Kompany departures and Fernandinho's twilight year.

With no clear consistency from rivals I hope we manage to find some ourselves, gel into a unit and benefit from having the best squad and win the league anyway before finding dominance again.

Agreed with most but I think the Gone Dogging Replacement is Douglas Luis next year and I think seeing by how he plays against Liverpool.. he will fit in nicely when we have a foreign slot open for him after Fernandinho leaves.
Hopefully but you never know....

Now we are done I have to say it’s extremely underwhelming.

We had probably 4 issues that needed resolving as an absolute bare minimum this summer,

1) a new RCB, that eventually was achieved but very clearly wasn’t our first choice. Maybe it turns out for the best but we have to be getting our first choice targets for priority areas and that was top priority. Box ticked but there’s some disappointment

2)we needed a mobile holding midfielder in the dinho mould preferably, that didn’t even get looked at, box left blank.

3) we needed pace in the wide areas, somebody who could run past players, run off the ball in behind and somebody who could go on the outside rather than checking in and slowing down play every single time. We signed Torres who doesn’t seem similar enough to what we lose from sane leaving box left unticked

4) we needed to replace zinchenko with an actual recognised leftback, not done so but there’s the option of Ake playing there, remains to be seen whether that will work. If you was being generous you could maybe tick that box, I’d say it’s half ticked until we see him play there and it’s also reliant on him not being needed centrally.

Those were the 4 minimum requirements for me this summer and we’ve possibly achieved half of them at best.

on top of that we had Silva leaving, I wasn’t necessarily expecting a direct replacement but we need a replacement numerically even if it was an additional winger instead we did nothing there.

I always thought a striker was on next summers to do list but it wasn’t totally unimaginable this window, especially if it were to be somebody who could play centrally or out wide, there was certainly a space for a player like that and even more so when we chose not to react to losing Silva.

If we were the reigning champions by some distance you could maybe say we’ve done the bare minimum but we’re not and needed a much bigger window, it’s hard to say we’re definitely better off than we were last season nevermind improved enough to make up the big gap, and that’s before factoring how our rivals have improved during the same time.

I’m not unhappy with any of the signings we’ve made but we’ve not done enough significant changes were needed and we’ve tweaked at best.

Edit. I forgot to even mention sales, For which underwhelming would be quite a generous description.

We were lowballed on Sane. Not a disgraceful figure but can’t say it was a good deal should have got significantly more. Otamendi for €15 million was an accounting procedure only, we essentially let him go for free. Not getting anything for Garcia was a beyond ridiculous decision, you haggle but you take what you can get when a player has zero benefit to the squad being around for another year before leaving for free. The Tosin deal and any other youngsters I’ve missed off are not significant enough to mention. Few deadwood we haven’t shifted but there’s time for that with other windows still being open.

Lol. Hello Benjamin Mendy

Think I am in the 1% that still think Mendy will turn out alright.

Post-lockdown he looked like more of the player we signed other than that one huge error. He was excellent against Wigan too so I am reserving judgement until he gets 15 starts in a row.

If he can't manage that through fitness or after those games he still looks rusty then it's probably time to move him on next summer.

He's not quite reached Stones level yet!

Aguero is injury prone and Jesus is nowhere near an adequate replacement. A net spend of £60m does not indicate intent, more a 'we've made a profit again' attitude, 'look at our business model.'
Having said that, if the players we have start putting up a fight it might be a lot less worrying.

Aguero has been injury prone his entire City career yet I haven't seen people calling for a new first choice striker before now.

And every single club in the league would want Jesus as a second choice striker, all but maybe 3 clubs would have him as first choice! He is criminally underrated.

We desperately needed another striker.

Even with the 2 we have,we are still lacking another 20+ goals a season scorer.

We should have brought someone in on loan.

We dont need to spunk £100,000 000 on every player.

So many chances go begging,it is ridiculous.

I agree on loaning someone, Bayern has 2-3 loan players every season, just from top of my had they had James Rodriguez, Coutinho, Perisic, they getting Douglas Costa now

These are good players that can do a job.

Is there really not a striker in any of top league that can be loaned and we dont have to play Sterling or Mahrez in centre forward?

Even if injured players are back I might prefer Jesus from left, Sterling from right and striker between them.

Kun is 32, injury prone who always needs 3-4 games to get going after injuries. Thats the Kun we know. Now he lost some pace over the years but still has the killer instinct front of goal hopefully but has not played more than 1-2 games since March. His match fitness must be shit and I dont expect him to be sharp and firing until end of November maybe bit earlier. (and then he can be out with new injury too.)

It would have made lot of sense to get a loan striker. With the amount of chances we create and miss surely the 3rd striker of Lyon, Leipzig, Benfica would score a couple for us even with not being world class strikers costing 100m pounds.
Fuck even I would score a few that gets missed by Sterling. :)

Khaldoon has often spoken of City planning on a medium to long term basis. Our net spend has been relatively small, no apparent panic buys, I think behind the scenes City are working on something big for January or June 2021. In the meantime Braaf, Palmer and DeLap can battle for a third striker spot.

Depends on the goal of the window...

Control net spend? Bravo - job done. I mean, we are in unprecedented times and all that.

Actually address issues and improve the squad? Fail.

Not addressing Kompany’s departure last year was criminal. Not addressing it again or Silva leaving is comical.

Ruben Dias says hello.

We have also signed one of the most promising attacking midfielders in world football.

I am relatively happy.

Ruben Diaz is looking like a fantastic move and, touch wood, it looks like we finally have a concrete partnership at the back.

Ferran Torres for 22m is an absolute steal. No matter what else happened in the window, that alone makes it a huge success.

People going on about Garcia - i'd rather keep him for a season and let him go. With Tosun away we need the cover if say Laporte or Diaz gets injured. And if we show Barca they can't fanny us about in the process then happy days.

A bit disappointed in Tosun going as to me he is a far better player than Garcia. Need to ask serious questions of our outgoing transfer deals. That said, he owes us nothing and wasn't given his chance. Maybe he wanted away and the club granted his request out of good faith.

With regards to strikers, a loan would have been ideal but Pep gets criticism for not playing the youngsters, then more criticism when he does and they don't instantly deliver...a loan move would also mean less minutes for Jesus which is not ideal.

Also rate Ake highly, gives us a strong left back option aswell, which it looks like we need. Personally I'd have prefer to keep Angelino.

Pretty happy with the window.

An excellent CB in Ake that can also cover some of our weaker positions and push for being a starter in any one of them.

Dias looks a good buy. Quality young player that should help us to be a bit more solid at the back.

I think Torres will be a world class player in time. It may take him a while to adapt but he has all the attributes we need.

Pretty decent... An LB would havebeen ideal.

Sorted our main CB position. Sane replacement.

Next summer will be crucial
