Agree with a lot of the stuff written in the thread but would suggest "freefall" is incorrect. I think this is more of a slow, painful death. Since we won the league things have gradually gotten worse at such a slow pace that many cant or don't want to see it. I think that is why MP still has so many backers among the fans. We've not had horrendous short-term runs where we have lost 6 on the bounce and everyone has turned on the manager. Instead its a draw here, a couple of losses there, followed by a few nice wins to keep us in contention and everything looks rosy again. Then we have the "Its February and we are still in 4 competitions" and I can see why fans still back the manager. My argument is, I always feel like our season hangs in the balance with Pellegrini, I have no confidence that he can send out a team to simply "get the job done". Saturday was a prime example, tactically it was an absolute disgrace and its not the first time. Leicester are doing unbelievably well but lets not kids ourselves, they are not a great side. The league is competitive but its not great on quality and I am firmly of the belief that a top-class manager would walk the league this season with this City side despite our obvious deficiencies. I don't think it is all the managers doing, I don't think the players push themselves enough and an overhaul of the team is required with some fan favourites probably needing to leave the club.
I think Pep coming in is great for the club and great for the fans but I think its just as great for Pellegrini because he comes out of this with the sympathy of the football loving public, for the way he has handled himself in troubled times. I think the reality is actually, that things have become so poor that Pep is Pellegrini's knight in shining armour because it seems to have made people forget his generally poor transfer dealings, his totally inept tactics and more importantly his lack of progression with arguably the best group of players in the league. Without Pep I think there is a strong possibility that Pellegrini would have lost his job last summer and it is almost nailed on that he was gone this summer anyway but now he gets to leave with his head held high.
I hope that somehow we can turn this slide around and we can win the Capital One Cup and win the league but I feel if we manage to do so it will be in spite of Pellegrini and not because of him.
