Totally agree. One thing that struck me the other day is that in recent years, for the first time since early 90s (maybe early 80s) we've had several players who have stayed for quite a few years. We can all point to the odd player, like Ian Brightwell, who grew up at City and stayed for most of his career, but in recent years we've had quite a few who have lasted 5 years or more (starting with the obvious 2008 signings Kompany and Zabba). For most of my adult life this is unusual. Just as we've got to idolise a player he's been moved on. Usually because of relegations/promotions/managerial change but in recent years (despite managerial change) we've managed to keep a nucleus of players for 5 years or more. This is important because it gives our younger fans the opportunity to develop true, legendary figures as their heroes and helps the club's identity develop.
We may not have had the success in recent years that some have predicted but, as with my boyhood in the 70s, we've found players who we can idolise. I got Bell, Tueart, Watson, Hartford, Barnes and Booth in my formative childhood years and was absolutely delighted with everything they did for City, but later generations had one or two 'names'. Thankfully, my children have their own names now - Yaya, Sergio, Silva, Kompany and Zabba
