How long will the rebuild take?

I respect your opinion, but if I can ask you who you believe genuinely still is (at the top of their form) , or has the potential (on a genuine upward slope) to be top class out of that current squad?

For me it is Dias.

Both keepers ageing and failing.

Stones, Ake, Walker and Akanji and on the downward cycle.

Lewis may be a player who is improving but he doesn't have a true position and is nowhere near physically good enough.

Gvardiol may well be worth keeping, but he is a centre half who has been played out of position that much he has forgotten the basics of his core trade.

Nunes is shite
Duku no end product & shite.
Savinho is a Brazilian Grealish.
Grealish, our worst ever signing.

KDB and Gundogan are decrepit.

Haaland is bone idle and one dimensional.

Foden for me is nothing more than an inside right who can cut in and occasionally (not this year mind) score from a long shot. He's completely out of form and may be suffering from having achieved too much so soon.

Bernado and Kovacic, although decent players, are not going to improve nor be good enough in the time this will take.

And as for Rodri, well who knows what the future may hold.

Christ knows what McAtee (and he's not the answer) must make of it all, as he can't get in a team that has a worse current record than anything he saw at Sheffield United!

In short, if we were to try and sell them, we'd probably have to give most of them away and that sums up where we are.
Dias also not the player he was a couple of seasons ago when he was close to world class I would suggest but the closet thing we currently have to a leader and should be captain but he isn't VK in that regard either.

Not one player I can hand on heart say is anywhere near what they were even as recently as last season when winds of change were blowing.

As you say many because they are aging and not able to compete at this level anymore / currently and in all likelihood never will again ,

Only Dias , Rodri , Gvardiol , maybe one of the keepers but as a number two , Doku , Savinho ( only the latter two because we haven't really seen their full capability when better players are around them , Foden ( despite falling off a cliff this season ) , Haaland you would consider keeping if you had the wand the revamp the side in a window.

That means 12- 14 new players and of course that cannot be done in a couple of windows so the drop off will continue and take at least two seasons to start to rectify.

If done properly.... This will be a three to five year job. The squad has hit a wall, and two seasons worth of complacency is staring us in the face. Poor succession planning and arrogance by Pep and Txiki has left us with too many ageing and substandard players who are very obviously incapable of meeting the demands of 'elite' football.

Ederson - Mentally already elsewhere.
Ortega - Deserves regular football, will walk away.
Carson - Wage thief. Absolute joke of a squad member.
Walker - Finished
Stones - Made of glass, nearly finished
Akanji - Good squad / backup player. Made to look better by weaker players around him.
Ake - Same as Akanji
Dias - Definitely needs to be kept.
Gvardiol - Defensively, a headless chicken. Keep for one more season at CB, not LB or wing half.
Lewis - Not good enough at top level. Lightweight Championship player.
Bernardo - Finished at PL top level
Gundogan - Finished
De Bruyne - Finished
Foden - His bubble has burst. Nowhere near good enough to build any team around. Cash in.
Grealish - At the wrong club under Pep Guardiola. Needs to leave to resurrect his career.
Kovacic - One more year and he's Gundogan.
Rodri - Will leave City by choice. Won't sign another contract here. No chance.
Doku - Shite, schoolboy dribbler. No end product.
Savinho - See Doku
Bobb - Too raw, not ready for top level.
Haaland - See Rodri. Absolutely gone thanks to shit tactics employed by Guardiola.
McAtee - Less said, the better. Waste of a contract.

It's a total clear out needed, but the club can't do that over a couple of windows, so we'll be carrying passengers for a few more years.

Coach / Manager... Not Pep Guardiola. The single, very simple fact that he has NEVER, EVER, built a team or squad from scratch should be enough for the Board to thank him for his service, and pay him off.
His stubborn reluctance to use / develop / retain Academy product is a significant reason behind our current situation.

In s nutshell... Rip it up and start again with fresh faces at every level. Spend big on a top class young coach and staff, two strikers, three attacking midfielders, two defensive midfielders, three defenders, and two goalkeepers. All at, or with potential to hit, elite level within two years.

Yes.... That's how fucked Pep and Txiki have left this squad with their arrogance and failure to plan for the future.

It was always going to happen with Pep. It's been no surprise to me. My biggest disappointment is that such a well-run, wealthy organisation has allowed this to happen.

Mansour and Co have slept on the job.

Genuine question, who is your pick with Premier league experience??
Zakaria think the fee will be high considering our desperation, but the wages should be reasonable for 3 to 5 years, can be Rodri`s back up can play CB but not particularly well, is tall quick ish and determined. We may well have to play with 2 DM for quite a while even when Rodri returns, to build confidence in defense.

This, it’s all about players.

All we need to do is buy better players, ones that are as good or can be as good as the likes of KDB, Walker, etc have been in their prime.
This is a revelatory thought. I've just spoken to my contacts at the club and told them about this post. Txiki was speechless, as the thought of buying better players had never occurred to him.

Agree with every word. Absolute best post I have seen on here for a long time, however standby for the happy clapper incoming salvo!

We won the league last season when every player bar KDB had arrived on Pep's watch. If that's not building a squad then I don't know what is.

You say Pep is stubborn when it comes to using the academy, but then say that Lewis, Foden and McAtee are all a waste of a shirt.

as per Einstein's definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. This for me is Pep at the moment, we haven't got the right players available (or operating at the levels they could a couple of seasons ago), to play the system we're playing week in week out - it's not working.
We've still got decent talent available, but unfortunately the system is making them look shit - attackers constantly facing packed penalty areas and defenders and midfielders being exposed time and time again.
Pep needs to change his mentality, be more pragmatic, sit deeper etc - change the system to suit what's available - he can go back to high possession based football again when reinforcements come in, but for the short term he needs to sacrifice his principals.
At the moment everyone knows the script, which will be repeated on Sunday without doubt We're like a boxer with a glass jaw and a weak punch always being on the front foot against a less skilful opponent, never landing a meaningful blow but with our guard down - everyone can see the KO counter punch coming.
Bang on and well-predicted.

Imo we need to sell Walker asap so we can have a new captain.

Ideally imo we'd bring 4 players...a new RB, CM & 2 AM.

If our first team allowed us to have a bench of Stones, Lewis, Gundogan, KDB, Foden, Savinho/Doku, then I'd think he'd be well on the way to a proper rebuild in the summer. In that case maybe only we'd be challenging again next season.

But I doubt we'll get that many players so the rebuild won't really even start till the summer so we' be at least an extra season building up.

We are also asking a lot of Pep's successor if that's soon.

So anywhere from 1- 3 seasons would be best case. 5+ more likely unfortunately. Once it's not dire in the meantime I'd be happy.

I don't know if we need a Keegan or a Royle next.
