How long will the rebuild take?

A lot of investment needed In my opinion to get to the squad levels of Arsenal and Chelsea and Liverpool - they have left us behind.

I think it will be 2 years at least before we challenge for the league again.
We've seen it over the course of footballing history.

Nothing lasts forever.

Scousers in the 80s
United in the 90s and 00s

Chelsea popped up with a bit of disturbance to their dominance

And now it's been us for the last 10 years.

Nothing lasts for ever.

Over the next 5 years I don't think any team will dominate anymore. It will swing between the scousers, us, and Arsenal, maybe Chelsea.

We just need to reflect on the good times and be humble in the bad times.

Lets be honest the league will be much better if not one team dominates it and unlike the arse and rags fans, at present we don't think football dies if you finish outside the top 4 and go potless a season.

We will be competing for top honours every season even if we are not champions every year then fine, just as long as the rags never win it ever again I can take a year or so where someone else might.

trophies are a bonus not a privelidge.

There is more chance of us winning at Anfield than a January signing of note.
I was about to say similar
I don't see any major new signings in this January window.
If we had available
Rodri
Bobb
Stones
Ake
Akanji
Foden
Kovacic
Jack ( for 90 mins )
Doku ( for 90 mins )
Then we wouldn't be as desperate.
I am sure the club are already looking at Kev & Walker replacements.
We need to be patient and remember who we are and where we came from.

Id say it isnt a rebuild, it is evolution. Older players will stay, younger ones will be introduced, as is normal. This version of our team have to find their feet. Lewis, Pusey, ect will be PL winners.
This is true. We have a brilliant structure in place at all levels of the club. We may have a couple of lean years in terms of trophies but will continue to grow. The squad needs a refresh and Pep will oversee this transition,

The most frustrating part of that though is we could have dominated even more and for longer with just a few slightly better or more ambitious transfers.

I still believe that we can continue to dominate and not have to share many trophies IF we actually spend some of these hundreds of millions we’ve accumulated over the last few seasons, and spend on players that will obviously improve us, not just potential or squad fillers.

Our position will be maintained as a serious contender as long as the current leadership remains robust and engaged

When they started this experiment they were the 3rd/4th best team in the league.

They've spent £1bn over the last three seasons, finished in midtable twice and are now back to being the 3rd/4th best team in the league.

I think it's a bit early to be celebrating Chelsea's business model!
Perhaps but Maresca looks the real deal.

Sorry but Pussey should not be in the conversation.

Pussey could be another Garcia etc, we need elite players to get back to the top, not promising kids.

I think people are deluding themselves if they think we can bring in the kind of quality we need in January. Even if top quality players become available then, which they don't often, who worth his salt is going to want to sign for us until the Premier League charges have been resolved?
Irrelevant! Players can have a clause in their contract if they are worried just point at Pep who renewed
The charges have been around for a number of years and we have still signed players

Totally agree.

But our board are obsessed with the net spend trophy.
And now all that haggling over a few million is costing us.

We post record profits year upon year upon year, but penny pinch when the purse is opened.

Buying players who "might" come good is a huge risk. And in the long term is waste of money.

It's not hard to identify a position that needs filling, earmark 2 or 3 TOP players for that position then table the appropriate transfer money.

Yep! This public image of not spending the most needs to piss off now and add some real stars into the squad

No they aren’t, they are obsessed with the building sustainable long term success of the club, to think they are only obsessed with spend is just daft, after the last 10 years.

Did Txiki recently give an interview talking about the problems we faced with player recruitment & retention in 23?
Yes, after the treble, he and Pep made errors, too loyal for me.

We have been very static with the squad for two seasons, baffling to be honest, the Rodri/back up partner sums up the monumental mess up.

His replacement should have been planned the season before as it was clear he was on the wain, he fact he wanted to leave before last season and we could have got a fee was a bonus but instead we gave him a 3 year extension Hopefully this season has given them a kick up the arse before its too late Every player has a sell by date even the likes of Kev We have allowed Stones to have so much time injured which should have been identified and a back up found allowing Doyle to go to Norwich was madness
Absolutely baffling and give me no confidence that they haven't taken their "eyes of the ball"

We signed players from within the group and brought Gundo back, in the last transfer window. It’s taken time but clearly the court cases have now had a detrimental affect.

I think you are both wrong in this regard - net spend angle.

You especially with your " kid in a sweet shop " approach to buying shiny new toys at every opportunity.

Do you seriously run a business of your own ?

The club is managed with a professional and serious business plan throughout, as has been shown and continues to be demonstrated by the new stadium development.

There are clearly a number of factors which have collided and helped produce the situation which is currently affecting the team performance, but trying to buy every player which captures your imagination is not the way the club will proceed.

Sorry to be so harsh @richards30 , but I'm afraid that's how I see it.

That's they way I see it. We don't know if we're going to get a eye watering fine so caution is needed on any spending until the case is over
