How would you assess Rodri's season?

I think he has done ok as he was thrown on at the deep end which is something Pep doesnt normally do. With Laporte being out meant Fernandinho was used in defence, so it meant instead of swapping with Fernandinho and getting use to the premier league, he played alot more than most in their first season with Pep. I think he has done ok and hopefully will get better each season.

I'll give him another season. Put a couple of more mobile players in the midfield and we get to see the reason why we have bought him.

I think he's had a decent season and there's a lot of potential still.

He's one of those players who rarely be MOTM but he keeps the ball ticking over, never loses control or makes a bad pass. He's always available for the ball and links up the play. He can make interceptions when needed and gives us height on set pieces. Can't fault the guy if our corners are useless though.

If course he's not quick, but come on where will you find 6 foot 4 speed merchants who tackle like Fernandinho and pass like Silva?? Play him with mobile players and he will be a very good player.

Overall a B from me and I do feel next year he will kick on and dare I say it could be a future captain?

Good post, mate!

I have to say, some of the posts on this thread, and across the whole forum after the Lyon game, stink of rag-like arrogance and smacked arse syndrome. Players not given a season to settle. Everyone who isn't deemed good enough for us is mediocre or shit.

Since when did we give a fuck about a record signing? Are people seriously expecting even more from Rodri just because he cost 3 million more than Mahrez? It's such a non-factor.

People falling over themselves to point out how they were the first to call a player shit. Embarrassing, attention seeking rubbish.

rodri has to be given time because of the defence we had this season it was all over the place
its key to his role in the team that city have a solid and good back 4 or 3 or 5 ? then judge him

I cant see him giving much confidence to the defence tbh. (Especially when coupled with Gundo.)

Fernandinho in last 4-5 years were working his ass off in DM, he was a pitbull front of defence even more at the time when Yaya was next to him who did have zero workrate off the ball.

What Rodri wont be going forward is more mobile and quicker. That only gonna change is worse direction as he gets older.

His passing game/range might be better than Ferna's.

I relly hope he will have a much better second season. Same as Cancelo who so far did not really add much compared to how he was described as 4 times the player than Danilo...

He’s a young player in his first season in the Premier League in a difficult position. I have no doubt he will be a fantastic signing.

Will people ever learn to give players time? Do you remember how off the pace Fabinho looked in his first few months?

It’s thoroughly depressing. He’s an incredible young player getting up to speed in a difficult position.

Always good to know who the latest boo boy is though.

It's opinions mate.
The thread title asks what peoples assessment of Rodri is.
Hence, you get differing opinions.
Personally I'm okay with that.
We paid a shed load of money for this guy and he's slow.
It's not rag like, every team has fans that will whinge about a new signing if he's slow, I even remember City fans doing it about Rodney Marsh.
It's not something only rags do.

The thread asks for poster's assessment of the player.

From what I can see the majority of posters have a pretty "meh" assessment of him, with a few of us realising he's worse than that.

Opinions were asked for and opinions were given. That's how a football forum works.

If you cant handle that the only attention seeking slapped arse is you.

In a training session Ederson passed the ball to Rodri but it was too high and went over his head. 40 minutes later Rodri came back with the ball and said to Ederson " Why did you kick it so hard ?"

He’s no better than Barry, Javi Garcia, Fernando & De Jong for me. He’ll never cut it here as he’s not mobile enough and too cumbersome. To think he cost more than what we sold Sane for. I was genuinely surprised how poor he looked the first time I saw him. Granted he’s got some boots to fill but very limited compared to Fernandinho.

Youre doing a disservice to De Jong and in particular Barry but see similarities to Fernando and Garcia.
I see nothing in Rodri to make me think hes anything more than decidedly average

To be fair, we were told the likes of Fernando and Javi Garcia needed time as well. Time isn't always some magical fix, for every Fabinho there is a Jorginho.

Rodri isn't going to get a rest and full preseason this year, the new season is a matter of weeks away. The thought that in a few weeks time, he is going to come back a completely different player, is wishful thinking in the extreme.

Played ok, but needs to improve or we will need to replace him.

To the poster who thinks De Jong and Barry were at the same level as Javi Garcia and Fernando - do you even watch football?

how much did we pay for Rodri?

As some have said, similar to Javi Garcia and Fernando, but I would state a wee bit better. His role is to protect our back 4. Has he done this game in game out? I would say hes tried. But the blame is the tinkering of defenders rather than him not doing his job. He's tried. Our back 4 has been terrible and hes been exposed.

Like Mahrez.

Compare Sterling record when City got 100 points to Mahrez record since joining.
Mahrez is very good player but he didn't improve the productivity on the right side

A massive part of the back 4 being bobbins is that this kid has been "protecting" it rather than the dynamic, aggressive, wiley Fernandinho.

I am flabbergasted that blues cant see this.

How does a player whose only redeeming feature is he has a nice pass on him protect a back 4?

Its akin to putting Ryland on the doors and expecting no dickheads to get inside your club.
