HS2 - Cancel it now

3 major stations in Manchester have become 1 and a bit - so it’s hardly surprising. If spending in Manchester on infrastructure had matched that in London per head - things would be fine. The fundamental issues will take billions and 15 years to fix but there’s no evidence of any motivation to spend serious money outside the Capital.
If you go back a bit further, we had Vic, Exch, Central, and Picc. as well as some smaller stations like Oxford Rd. How we progressed from that to Picc and a bit, would make a great study in incompetence and neglect of the North.

+ Mayfield Station. Not such a big loss compared to the others perhaps as it was East facing, but it could have been used to provide additional through platforms or even the space to create a west facing terminus

HST and its maintenance facilities will disfigure large areas of rural Cheshire with no gain for local residents.

But fans attending mid week matches struggle to catch the 2201 all stations to Crewe without leaving early. If you miss it the next and last train is 2338 so it's getting in towards 1 am before getting home.

Fuck HST, fuck VAR and fuck Martin Tyler.

Northern section of HS2 about to be officially put on pause. In reality no work has been done on the section north of Birmingham for months. Dept of Transport now more focussed on Crossrail 2. Transport infrastructure spending in London now 10 fold that elsewhere in the UK.

Ah but we have to have £106billion in the kitty if the cosmopolitan elite of the Home Counties need to get to Birmingham a few minutes quicker than they do now. We are nowhere near as deserving a case for the taxpayers' quid to be spunked on a LiVARpool to 'Ull, west to east electrified line!

We need independent government in the North. The London centric government has had us over, ever since the industrial revolution. If they had started in the North it would already be open to Birmingham. Wonder why they started in London? why they put in expensive tunnels that were not needed. Ill tell you, so they can get to work quicker in London.

Can't disagree wth that. In fact, it all started with 1066. William the bastard was Britains richest person ever. In the next 100 years, effective ownership of property passed to a southern based elite, who have proceeded ever since to extract rent and taxes from the rest of us. I won't even mention the Enclosure Acts, the failure to allow us parliamentary representation etc. etc. Even today, the biggest landowners in Yorkshire are earls and dukes who couldn't point to York on a map. (Just follow the City 50,000, guys).

Apologies if already mentioned:

the latest bbc report https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51171249 talks about journey times being slashed:
London to Birmingham goes from 1hr 21m to 52m
London to Manchester goes from 2h 7m to 1hr 7m

assuming a direct train for both of them , and allowing for a slight (longer) deviation off the London to Manchester route to get to Birmingham, I still find it incredible that it would only take an extra 15m to do the Manchester journey. The deviation into Birmingham must be very slow.
