Huddersfield (H) | FA Cup | Post Match Thread

Whilst not wanting to go back to the bad old days of the 70s and 80s I do feel we are bit more of a soft touch than we used to be. We are no longer the sort of place where away fans would come and keep their heads down rather than be openly causing trouble. Suppose it comes with the more Corporate/Family friendly club we now are.
Have talked to fans from various clubs, who felt intimidated at Maine Road.
Think the location was a tough, working-class area with a lot of pubs that weren't necessarily welcoming to away fans.
Apart from one or two remaining pubs, the Ethiad Stadium is in a soulless, vacuum.
The open-plan lay out around the ground stops most idiots (from both sets of fans) from playing up. Having cameras everywhere has stopped a lot of aggression.
Unfortunately, the FA Cup often attracts "gloryhunters for the day", who can be far more aggressive than the regular fans.
If City get a huge away allocation in the next round, some scoundrels could get tickets and may play up ?

Yep, agree with that. Plus all the old heads have probably stopped going to the matches now, not all but the vast majority I'd guess. I think City are just left with the 15/16 yo now who like a bit of posturing but would probably shit it if anything big kicked off. Same as at most clubs really

Some of the Town fans really were obnoxious. Interesting to see the police take no action when they sung about "dirty Arab money" inside and outside the stadium. Why is public overt racism against Arabs tolerated? I thought some of Huddersfield's support were the worst fans we have seen In Manchester for a few years; bullying children, familes, and older fans and behaving like morons. Their genuine support is usually impressive but yesterday it was full of ignorant day-trippers.

It's a big day out for clubs like them and as such it attracts loads of wankers who'd never normally step foot inside a football stadium. It's their cup final and gives them 90 minutes in the spotlight for once. Look at Gillingham in 1999, they were getting under ten thousand fans but sold out over forty thousand tickets for Wembley. Add on that ridiculous Yaaaaawkshire pride chip on their shoulders and it's a powder keg for trouble.

Doubt many of them will be seen when Leeds go to Huddersfield.

You only have to see the away fans coming out at the same time as us now and then gobbing off outside to see how soft we have gone. Imagine that in the 70's and 80's.

No chance of that they'd have got leathered. They were kept in then either bussed out or to Piccadilly to get the train back under a huge police escort. I think the police stopped walking them back due to them constantly coming under attack. Any rogue ones kept their fucking heads down and prayed nobody sussed them.

These days we are all sixty plus, older, wiser and not as fit as we used to be. We are also well aware if we did decide to get stuck in that with everyone filming it we'd soon be nicked and banned. Take that incident on the tram, it's all over the internet. I'm sure eventually they'll get the culprit. None of us wants to be banned now we've got a great team winning trophies. In the old days being banned would have been a bonus lol. I have to admit the old hackles still rise when I see opposition fans taking liberties and it takes me repeating everything I've written here in my head to stop me getting stuck into them.

You're absolutely right, but it's the same at most stadiums now.

I'm not sure if they have an arrangement with all visiting supporters, but the Arkles Pub near Anfield now welcomes coachloads of City fans whenever we play at Goodison Park.

It was great the other week, but imagine that arrangement before the FA Cup Quarter Final in 81 and then having to walk through Stanley Park.

One of the rare exceptions is probably old Trafford which still feels a bit old-school when you're walking from the cricket ground to the backdrop of anti-City songs from the nearby pubs

84% possession - got to be one if not the highest of any game. Think they got the balance in taking the centres kicking off !

Same here Paul!

A couple of seasons ago I took a mate, a well-known face from Maine Rd days, who hasn't been for years due to run-ins with the law.

He couldn't believe the away fans (Spurs on this occasion), fronting people up, shouting the odds, etc.

He's not been again since. Just goes to rugby now with his wife and family.

Think for the big games against old rivals, we're no pushovers, but games such as yesterday's, the reasons you've stated definitely have an influence on proceedings.

Always found Huddersfield fans sound on many trips to Leeds Road and McCalpine etc. I was surprised the scumbag count was so high. Thought they were worse than Leeds who at least get behind their team.

Does anybody know how the lad who got hurt on the tram is?
Hope he's ok..looked really nasty ..hope the police catch the cunts who attacked him.
That boiled my piss when I watched that yesterday, but I’ve seen a video today of him laughing it off so he’s fine. A story to tell when he’s older I suppose and probably a scar for life.

The usual hilarious where were you when you were shit chants are especially ironic coming from them

Think they set a new stadium record last time we went to their shithole. Wonder how many they’ll take away next week when they’re not playing a big club

Glad that he's ok..cheers for that mate
Hope the **** that did it gets put away preferably in Strangeways.. he might get a bit of comeuppance in there.

I live close to Udders and have got a lot of sympathy for them. They've been through some right shite over the last few years and their attendances are still decent for such a small town. OK they have some dickheads, we all do, but fair dues to them still sticking with their club. I remember feeling summat similar when we were shite. Let's not forget where we've come from.
