Huddersfield Town (A) | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

A bit of a stroll performance wise but quite a bit off our free flowing best of a few years ago, even at this sort of stage and against this sort of opposition. Just so many passes but a lack of real quality where it matters in a final ball or movement. Felt like Savinho and Bobb would continually get the ball in space at either side of their penalty box then hit a cross or cut back straight to a defender.

A few good performances, notably O'Reilly who I thought was MOTM, but I'd like to see us break down these low blocks a lot more often, get some shots away and look like we might score a good few.

Someone else said earlier that 8 graduates played, with two more on the bench....

Trafford
Foden
Bobb
O'Reilly
Lewis
Mukasa
Heskey (J)
Heskey (R)

Braithwaite
Mfuni
Yeah think one replaced the other, but either way, bloody loads

Foden and Nico G the best two players today imo - Nico O, Rico, Nunes, good too.

Savinho and Bobb had a lot of the ball and not a lot created, Savinho's crossing in particular was awful but took his goal well.
no actual target man / number 9 so played mainly low cross balls they packed defence think he did ok tonight and scored

He did it when he came off too, and he was one of our better players....
I hope he wasn't bollocking him for taking a shot from outside the box which flew over the bar.. and told him he should have played the save pass. We need to shoot more!

Good run out for second string...

Much as expected really. Huddersfield defended deep with their sole ambition being to keep the score to a minimum which they achieved. City were in complete control of an attack vs defence game.

MoTM Foden pulled the strings centrally & took his goal very well against a stubborn defence after a sublime layoff from Mukasa.

Gonzalez kept the shield in front of Stones & Aké closed & intact, but was rarely troubled in truth. Fuck knows what slap head was saying to him as he came off though...

Savinho grew into the game & made it two with an exocet missile of a shot through the keepers hands, & off the underside of the bar into the roof of the net. 0-2 City.

The central areas were too congested to allow for beautiful football, but we totally dominated to make it a comfortable away win against a dogged & determined Huddersfield side.

It was good to see so many academy products finish the game, even though we lost our rhythm because of multiple late changes. Emile must have been bursting with pride to see the Heskey boys making their joint first team debuts.

Bobb showed some decent flashes, but he still seems a bit off the pace.

Lewis couldn't affect the game centrally because of the congestion, but he kept everything steady & ticking over nicely. The little he had to do, he did well.

O'Reilly played very well & Savinho became more effective, the more O'Reilly drifted left to support him in attack.

We're away to Swansea in the next round, so hopefully the same squad can get another run out & a further opportunity to get up to speed & impress.

The return of Kalvin Philips!

Finally, welcome back Kalvin! Who thought they'd ever see him in a City shirt again? Hopefully, he'll play some part throughout the season in giving respite to our midfield in games where we're comfortably ahead.

Roll on Burnley at the Etihad!

The same way people look at the twisted wreck of an automobile on the other side of the road. That’s why.

The MDT is almost a replica of being at the game. Say what you see the second it happens. It’s like that in the stadium were I sit. It’s just letting off steam mostly. I think after last season and the two losses this season, the frustration is there. The bigger picture says 4 games 3 wins a draw and 1 goal conceded. Which of course is very good and a vast improvement. It’s just frustrating at times to see players who are lauded as having so much talent do what they do time after time and it spills over.

Might have my numbers mixed up but started with 6 academy lads and ended with 7?

Good result, job done, keep it all ticking over
Started with 6 (including JT)

2 came on, (Heskeys)

2 unused on the bench

I don't get the point of this in a cup tie, grimsby took the game to united and ended up winning the tie on penalties, Lincoln did the same against chelsea last night, and were unlucky to lose by all accounts.

Decent game, really pleased for Sav, needed a goal and the confidence boost…ideally he’ll go on to be a decent super sub for us.
