I think it might be the other way around - I think female spiders are bigger than male spiders.It's always this time of year (towards the end of the school summer holidays) when giant house spiders come out. It's the males looking for a mate. They are huge, and very fast - but totally harmless.
If there's one in a place I don't want it to be, I use a spider catcher to move it.
