Hughes is to blame

I'm too tired to debate some of the points you made, even though a lot were valid I disagree with many of them.

Equally though the fact that you failed to name a valid alternative manager speaks volumes, to use your words.

Night.

Anyone expecting him to take us to being 'contenders' in a season is living in cloud cuckoo land.

Anyone expecting him to improve us in a season is merely stating the ambition that he showed in the summer (before he started down playing expectation as defeat followed defeat) and expecting him to follow the precedent set by Megson, Bruce, Alladyce, Redknapp, Hiddink, Hodgson and many others who can be named if you go past the last two seasons.

Significant but not outlandish improvement within their first twelve months. Getting more out of the players than many would have expected. That is the reason that those managers are given longer and allowed 'patience' whilst managers that don't do this are under pressure. Apart from Hughes apparantly because all of a sudden many of our fans have it in their heads that if you stick to the "give him time" cliche, a manager will magically reverse his traits.

And this is before I mention the huge comparitive financial disadvantage that all those managers worked under whilst showing the ability to get a lot out of their players, Players a lot less talented than City's.

I can only ask you to trust me and believe me when I say that I certainly did not have an "anti hughes" agenda when he arrived and believed he would move the club forward (without the money at that point). That has changed because of his results and perfromances. Nothing else. And I'm not comfortable with it being labelled "anti Hughes" really. If I am anti anything it is the results and performances he has produced and the fact that most of the league has "out managed" him, relative to what they have.

Perhaps I don't express this as much after results like those that you have mention. However, I only became "anti Hughes" as you put it around mid December. Two results mentioned were prior to that.

The fact that we can only name four matches out of, I don't know, maybe 50 played this season where we have over performed, whilst I could reel off 3 or 4 times as many where we have let ourselves down, speaks volumes.

Anyway, sleep calls. Good evening.

JMA makes some very reasonable points very well. there are of course question marks over our performance on the pitch. having said that, as it stands, we could still finish seventh and win the uefa cup, which would constitute enormous progress. so, even if i dont think it's likely we will do both, I have to think his judgement is a little premature.

How dare anybody question the messiah Hughes is the man he's doing such great job we should give him a big contract 5 more years and we might just get into the top 6 get him signed

Posts like that really don't help your cause.

No-one on here is claiming Hughes is the messiah and no-one is claiming that this season has been particularly successfull (could change with UEFA cup). Hughes has had 1 season, of massive turmoil and change. I've seen enough in this season, from his signings, the way he handles himself, and the home performances to trust him with another season. I genuinely think, if we stick with him, next season we will improve drastically. If we don't then fine, new manager.

But as JohnMaddocksaxe says just because you give someone time doesn't mean they can suddenly magic themselves someone who can dramatically improve things. I fail to recognise where this where this blind optimism comes from.

The shocking fact is that without the 2nd influx of players we had at christmas we would be in serious trouble right now. Despite the reluctance to change due to

1. Fear of the unknown
2. Our recent history

you have to admit things aren't right at the club and the performances throughout the season prove. It is for that reason why we need to change in management and to be honest I say its not just MH and his team who have to go but for me the spiv Cook has to go to.

just to reiterate i think a good number of people are impressed by his professionalism and his shrewd judgement of players, and understand that even if our results arent ideal atm, he is improving the club in ways that should benefit us in the future.... it's been said before, if this improvement on the pitch doesnt materialise pretty sharpish next season, then we will pretty much know that his strengths in those areas are probably outweighed by an inability to get the team to play to their best. if he does turn us into a smart outfit, we would be foolish to dump him. so it's a chance worth taking, because there is no way you can reasonably say that he must go in the mean time. there can be no accusation that he is damaging the club, lowering standards, behaving unprofessionally, signing unsuitable players. we have all the time in the world to make our minds up on him.
