Hughes - Update

I see many have decided to take me to tsk in other threads... so here is my appraisal of where we (as a club) are and what we've achieve since 24th May.

Firstly, let me make it absolutely clear for the nth time. I do not dislike Hughes because he is a former Salford United Player... far from it and it disappoints me that Bill (DeNiro) takes that view. We have had the discussion face to face many times.

The reason i have doubted Hughes is simple - I dont think he had the pedigree or experience that I wanted to see in the hot seat at this club. It is a matter of record and opinion based on last seasons performances that my view was no less correct or incorrect than anyone elses. It was my view and I was not afraid to express. I had earlier in the season stated I would be happy for Hughes to prove me wrong - personally I dont think he did prove me wrong last season - we were a poor display too many times formy liking.

So even me, Hughes's biggest critic, must accept that the start to this season has been nothing short of sensational and the football that has been played hasn't been too bad either.

Whilst I wanted him out last season I must confess, based on what I've seen this season the Jury is back in and out about him (follow that if you can). I temper my expectations through looking at the following measures

Transfers - I think he is about 7/10 when you add value for monry to the purchases, though on the whole the purchases have been pretty good - though I definately exclude RSC from that number, and admittedly Lescott has pleasantly surprised me. Bridge not so brilliant nor TBH and Bellamy is questionable as a VFM acquisition. Barry, Adebayor and Toure are superb and hopefully Tevez will also prove to be VFM.

Games Played - Can't fault 4 wins out of 4 without conceding, though I do suggest people try to not get carried away as we have not played anyone we wouldn't have expected to have beaten (even last season). If we are still unbeaten after 5 league games anyone that does not think he deserves a go should have a serious rethink. That said, with all the financial resources at his disposal I genuinely believe anyone with professional coaching badges would struggle to not create a decent side.

General approach - I applaud his team selection for the Carling Cup though for me (and I know this isn't in keepimng with many opinions on hers) I don't like his media style think he is too vanilla and needs to try and become a little more interesting and engaging.

So there you have it... Jimharri go ahead take the piss if you must....

Hughes, It's over to you.

Scorer, rational points well argued, don't agree with everything and I await the usual knee jerk reaction from certain posters after our first defeat.

I hope to be able to read similar posts from you in the future ;-) because surely that we will mean we are continuing to do well !!

Agree that these are "rational points well argued" but I seem to remember the same poster starting a thread announcing that he was leaving the forum because we would NEVER achieve with Hughes at the helm, and would come back once he was proved correct and Hughes was sacked. I also recall the accusation that Hughes simply wouldn't/couldn't attract big name players.

If you want to be so melodramatic and smug you can't really turn round and criticise other people for 'taking the piss' when you return with altered views!

Welcome back scorer. xxx

You say Bellamy may not be value for money...

He cost us 14M:

It took nothing from our budget.
It was immediatly swalled by WHU's debt, so never became part fo their transfer budget.

He wins balls, gets moves going forward, and when one of our players is being bullied, he gets in the twunts face (whoever is hurting our player).

So you can't really say he hasn't been VFM for us, when he has, in one sense (and I know this sounds dodgy, but I'm sure you get where I'm coming form, sort of) he was on a free (I'm not saying he was, but following the logic, he didn't take anything form us, add anything to WHU).

Apart from that, I agree with you scorer you silly old bugger ;-P

Bellamy was 8.2M mate.

And the rest.

When Hughes was asked did we pay 14m for Bellamy he's had a little giggle then said it was nowhere near, and just over half that amount, it's well know through the club he was 8.2m. SSN etc don't have a clue what we pay, and just take a wild guess, thats well known. Hughes does'nt act like Twatnapp and give out figures.

If it's so well known someone should probably tell Hughes.

"He's been a great signing for us. People say we paid £14m for him but actually it was nothing like that. It was more like £10m."

SSN etc don't have a clue what we pay, and just take a wild guess, thats well known.

Who mentioned SSN?

Hughes does'nt act like Twatnapp and give out figures.

Ooops.

8.2m raising to 10m, if it come's to 10m it means we have done well and so has he.

Just goes to show how they plucked up the extra 4m from nowhere. Same as most of the other signing's.

Think you know what I mean about Redknapp so don't try and act the smartarse.

Just saying that the price is potentially more than £8.2m, thats all. I'd be surprised if he had to achieve any great heights for the addons to start kicking in either.

And to be honest, in my cynical mind the words "more like £10m" probably means "quite a bit more than £10m".

Think you know what I mean about Redknapp so don't try and act the smartarse.

Personally I think if a manager is prepared to talk figures rather than hide behind undisclosed fees, it's a more honest way of going about things. Can't particularly recall Redknapp going on about figures, or Hughes avoiding talking figures, but I'd much rather clubs come out and say what they've paid.
