I was a big Hughes IN person, so not being biased, and I know he had his faults but after tonight Im really pissed off. I genuinely think we'd have beaten utd over two legs and we'd be better off if he had stayed. YES defensively we had problems under him (more down to personnel) but we ALWAYS looked dangerous going forward and like a team with goals in them, tonight we never looked like scoring and I have seen enough.

Hughes has gone so im not going to bleat on about this, but I just don't rate Bobbi Manc.....

Sorry but NOT a lot to discuss !!!!!!!!!!!!
In my opinion YOU ARE CORRECT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He saddled us with a squad full of players, 75% of whom are nowhere near good enough for where we want to be.

It will take another £250 million to kick us on to be good enough too.

The likes of Santa Cruz, De Jong, Barry, Zabaleta, Bridge, Wright-Phillips, Toure (maybe Adebayor) etc, all his big money signings, are simply not good enough and that's without mentioning those who have been and gone.

A look into the future....

Hughes is the West Ham manager

Last game of the season, we need to win to get 4th, they need to win to stay in the prem

It depends what you mean.

Santa cruz I agree and Toure we paid over the odds (due more to our status than Hughes)

But Barry, De Jobg, Bridge,SWP and Ade are ALL good enough to get us in the top 4 surely??

Maybe that sums up the 'second best' attitude of your average City fan.

I don't think any of those players would be anywhere near the first choice of the big three anymore. Ade was at one point (now? Mmm!), SWP and Bridge certainly were reserves and Barry and De Jong probably would be.

I'm of the opinion Hughes would have took us to where we wanna be, and agree bout the semi...
But...its not right to bring it up cos we've lost.
Thing is, we will never know.

When will people realise that Hughes is the cause of most of the problems we suffer now? More than 150 million to get a very unbalanced team which can not control the midfield even against weaker teams? ? getting rid of "creative"Elano? losing silly points earlier in the season? More than a year and a half in charge and won only four away games.... and what makes you so sure we were going to overcome Manchester United in the semi-final if he was still in charge? he lost all the derbies he played!

Maybe, but did you think we could attract the Messi's of this world withoug champs league football this season, seriously did you?? Rome was not built in a day, who would YOU have signed?

Even if that was true (slight case of tinted glasses me thinks), so what? It's meaningless to score 2 or 3 and let in 3. It's Hughes' slew of draws that has hurt our chances of 4th more than anything else (tho not signing a replacement for Elano is probably right up there aswell)

If's buts and maybes, we will never know so no use dwelling on Hughes irrespective of whether you think he was given enough time at the "helm" or not.

Its only when we lose that some of us look for excuses.

The reason we lost was because we were out thought and outplayed on the night in the areas of the pitch that matter and the vast majority of the team were well below what they can do over the 90 odd minutes.

We can take solice from the fact that if that's Everton at their best they will need to improve their squad over the summer to be competitive with us next season provided we get the players we need to take the next step in what is going to be a long road to the top.

There will be a number of glitches on the way and I prefer to put this one down to one of those nights.

We trust and hope there will be no more of these performances for the remainder of the season and they will be few and far between next season but they do happen.

What we do next Monday is all that matters now and whether Mancini stays or goes over summer will sort itself out then but I do agree we will not move forward as quickly as we should if we keep changing managers on a regular basis.

Everton have stuck by Moyes even through some lean times and it has paid dividends for them.

Hughes spent £14m on Kolo Toure and then made him captain!!!
He bought a keeper and sent our best one on loan!!!
He bought De Jong for £17m and Barry for £12m and failed to buy anyone creative or who can control a midfield.

I could go on, but the story is Hughes was fucking shite, get over it. You watch when the top clubs are managerless you see if Hughes takes over any of them.

I wonder if Cook still thinks he is the best young manager in England and what does that say about our ability to get the right bloke to take this club to where it wants to be if Cook is left to play a big role in who comes in after Mancini (lol).

here's how it would have panned out under hughes

draw sequence ends but, form stutters well into january. matthew upson and scott parker signed for 30m. AJ signs but doesn't play. fergie fields a weakened team for semi-finals (he never saw hughes as a threat), we reach carling cup final but are beaten by villa. get a few decent wins in the premiership, a few very frustrating high scoring losses and draws. right now we would be 5 points worse off but having had a day at wembley, and maybe we'd be in the FA cup.

but I would have no confidence that we would ever really challenge for fourth, or win the FA cup. under hughes we flattered to decieve, only turned up when the battle was already lost, as in the uefa quarters last year, and for that matter the race for european places last year. and I would have no real confidence that we would make fourth next year. I do, however, have confidence that we would have signed some decent 29 year olds on 5 year contracts at 6m per year.

right now mancini has the edge in league results, maybe hughes wouldn't have been that far behind, but every point is precious this season. more importantly I trust him to build a successful team for the future far more than I ever did Hughes. and believe it or not I much prefer watching this style of football.

-- Thu Mar 25, 2010 4:46 am --

Cook was on the verge of sacking Hughes after the West Brom game.

Totally Agree,

Just look at the players he signed, RSC, Toure yes we had to pay over the odds because of who we now are but should he have signed them anyway. NO

The squad we have is down to him and Bobby Mac has to work with it, we are still in a great position and can still finish 4th.

My point is if the board and Cook decide to dispense with Mancini especially if we don't finish fourth do we trust the person(s) responsible for picking the next manager that it will turn out to be a good one for the club.

I would have serious doubts about their ability to do so , so maybe changes elsewhere would be required.

I would like to think that Mancini will be given a full season to see if he is up to the mark in the premiership , plenty of managers will want the job but will they really have the will and commitment and energy and smarts to assist in improving the points tally per game if they know they have a short time to achieve that.

I personally think that Marwood has MORE influence than Cook, when it comes to players and management issues.
