Hugo Viana to be new Director of Football (Official Announcement p17)

I seriously hope Pep stays for another year, if he leaves this summer with a new DoF coming in, the CWC and doubts about one or two player’s futures, it’s going to be a difficult start for whoever the new manager is.
One more year, get this particularly difficult summer out ofthe way, give the new DoF twelve months to settle in, and hopefully all the furore surrounding the charges has all calmed down.

Then we can start our new era.
If it is one year and not rolling, then who makes the signings in the summer? The new manager comes in a year later with the budget spent, and may not fancy the players. I think any extension needs to be 2 years minimum.

Which potential new manager would be the biggest draw in terms of attracting the best players (and have the biggest ability to retain existing players we wanna keep), do you reckon?

I don't think there's a real draw manager out there now in the same way as Pep. Klopp is gone, Mourinho's cult has fallen off, Xabi hasn't done enough yet, Ancelotti is not that type, Zidane doesn't have the reputation for improving players, etc.
Xavi might be the closest fit but like Xabi, I'm not sure he's done enough in management for players to be desperate to play for him.

I don’t think we should be going after a real draw manager. We should be going after a manager whose style of play chimes with that of the new DoF, and if that is an emerging manager then so be it. The DoF sets the blueprint, the manager works towards that. Pep came as a draw manager but he and Txiki are a match made in heaven, so it just worked. If we appoint a big name for a big names sake, and he starts going against the DoF then it could unravel quite quickly.

Cheers mate. Mirrors my thoughts really, hence wondering what everyone else thought.

I did think Xabi Alonso might be the only one with a bit of X-factor but tbh his reputation could be a bit different by next summer depending on how this season pans out, though looking ok so far.

Agree to some extent, but in I think there are ‘big names’ that might not have draw power for players, esp the older ones, so I’m not sure they are one and the same thing.

None of those are even close to the calibre we need.
