Hugo Viana to be new Director of Football (Official Announcement p17)

Been having a think about where the squad is likely to stand next season and who's likely to leave, and what Viana is likely going to have to work with when he takes the reigns in June.

Ortega, Wilson-Esbrand, Gundogan, and McAtee are likely to be gone. Jury's out on whether Grealish and De Bruyne stay but just for the purposes of this exercise let's say they do, just with less first team involvement.

So that leaves us with:

Ederson
Akanji, Stones, Dias, Gvardiol
Rodri
[new CM], Foden
Savinho, Haaland, Grealish

[new GK]
Walker, [new CB], Ake, [new LB]
Kovacic, Lewis (Nunes)
Bernardo, De Bruyne, Doku (Echeverri)
[new CF]

For what it's worth I think we actually do have quite a big squad, it's just being ravaged by injuries right now.

Rodri and DeBrune are probably our two most important players
One is deep into the autumn of his career, the other, we don't know if we're going to get the same player back

We do not have a big squad at all, we had basically 20 players before Pep was forced to play Nunez.

Two of those were keepers so just 18 outfield players.

If you can find a smaller squad in the PL then let me know.

I'm a chartered accountant and I know that the club generates an average of c£100m cash from operations annually.

Any financial penalty from the charges is an unknown but notwithstanding that, there is serious money to spend.
And maybe the charges and the current apt situation, were an underlying factor why we haven’t spent big in the last two summer windows. So the sooner we are cleared and Pep tells the club where we stand, then nothing much is going to happen

Is this fact - or your supposition?

We don’t have a big squad is it the smallest no idea.Either way we are only 2 players of the maximum allowed, I was surprised we didn’t bring in one more and at the moment we could do with one.Gundogan looked a great idea, but maybe it’s not really worked out that way,not yet anyway.
For what it’s worth I think we have 3 or 4 players running on empty physically and mentally, no surprise after 9 years of relentless competing at the very top. This season will be what it will be and that’s okay.
I expect the summer to see maybe 4 players leave at a guess KDB, Walker, Bernardo, Kovacic or Gundogan and probably at least one keeper and 4 or 5 in.
We do have a lot of younger talent to base a rebuild on.

None of those are even close to the calibre we need.
Iraola who masterminded our defeat yesterday got Rayo Vallecano promoted, and finished 12th in La Liga plus a cup semi final. No mean feat for such a small club. He's young and worth keeping an eye on.

The guy at Forest laughably sacked by Spuds is doing well.

Michel at Girona finding it tougher this year.

Xavi is a big no. Just because he played in midfield for Barca does not make him a good manager.

Iraolo is doin an amazing job at Bournemouth. Got them playing real good football. Would he be able to handle the pressure of a bigger job?? Who knows. That’s why we pay the guys at the top the big bucks.
