Can i just say, direct cremation is not always like this.
Mum wanted one... it cost us £900 last summer, we got to sit for 5 hours with her coffin the day before to say our own goodbyes and treat it like a mini funeral for her, music, talking, looking at photos, just spending time... and then that company said they always use the same place (one near bury it was) and we were given a date it would be done( hence us going the day before), we even know the time as we noticed some paperwork dangling off the back side of mums coffin so had a read, and it said 8.30am the next morning (all we had know was it was to be the next day).
Direct cremations have come on since the days and image of "you don't know when it would be until you get the ashes back".
Don't know why i logged in to type all this really - i still cry all the time about losing mum.... I need her.
And this story makes me so angry for the familes...
(and we know we got mum back btw... as my sister asked for her metal knee to be included, so there it is in it's separate box... a charred metal knee...) (What i'm supposed to ever do with that i'm not sure!) (But mum was very proud of how she got on wit that knee)
Apologies mate, I didnt mean it to read as if it was a slight on direct cremation, I was just interjecting that it wouldnt be a great way for the undertakers in question to make money, as the fees for cremation are so low.
Like everone else I have no idea what has transpired here, save for the fact the pair were arrested under suspicion of prevention of a lawful and decent burial, fraud by false representation and fraud by abuse of there position.
Re direct cremation .. If a small service is required then you can pay under £600 to include attendance of mourners, music, a casket box, medical fees and disbursements, dependant of course on certain time slots being available. Blackley offer this lower priced service, as do many others and fair play for their commitment to decency, and transparancy.
On a personal level I would choose
pure cremation without any service, which is what I was referencing at the £400, with my ashes to be returned to my loved ones for burial, scattering or retention.
As for receiving your mothers ashes back, this is very much the case mate, as all crematoria staff in the UK follow and adhere to a strict code of conduct and procedures mentioned a few pages back. Also the deceased are never cremated together, or in numbers, save for a few special instances, such as a mother and infant.
After each cremation, your loved ones remains are raked, removed and transfered to a a specialized machine that make the cremated remains and bones finer, then boxed labeled and securely stored for collection.
I am sorry for the loss of your mum, the departure of a loved one being one of the most traumatic ordeals as humans that we will ever have to face.
