Huntingdon Train Incident - Reports of multiple stabbings

Appreciate your post. But the politics sub forum was created to avoid threads being derailed into blame games and finger pointing. From memory, there were lots of complaints about serious threads being hijacked for political whataboutery. We thought that the creation of a sub forum specifically for political waffling was the way to go. As for sides, we try hard to avoid being seen as favouring one "side" over another.

Totally get it, and no disagreement whatsoever. I very much welcomed the effort in the thread being kept apolitical fwiw.

Worth noting that the previous government wanted to remove all guards from trains. If the RMT hadn’t gone on strike these passengers would have had no train crew to manage the incident on the trains
Thankfully there was a guard on this particular train public safety should always come first, he has worked for 20years on LNER still in hospital critical but stable such a brave man, his family and friends will rightfully be proud of him saving the lives of passengers

Greater Manchester has reintroduced guards on buses as crime and violent behaviour soared on particular routes to record highs.

It was always a ludicrous proposal that there would not be a guard on a train for safety, incredulous that anybody would think that was a good idea.
As for guards on buses, I haven't seen any yet.
It always amazes me that in the daytime metrolink trams and stations can be flooded with ticket inspectors and travel safe officers, but at night when they are needed you hardly see any.

Not just the impact of cuts, but also the impact of a growing population that the country doesn’t have a growing infrastructure to align with the increase in numbers of people.

Too large a population trying to access underfunded and under-extensive services that can’t cover the need is part of what defines overpopulation, part of what defines a struggling country with poor quality of life, part of what is seen in the Developing World or Third World not a supposed First World country with supposed ‘high quality’ of life.

We are quickly going backwards as a country.
Rubbish

Presumably because night staff get more money and Metrolink don’t want to pay extra. There should be some law that makes sure public transport operates have X people present and visible to reassure the public(their paying customers) and deter antisocial behaviour - I’m not sure you can stop attacks like this necessarily but it would be a start

Out of interest why are you dismissing this without argument ? Only playing devil's advocate as holidaying on the continent in the summer and driving through France, Belgium, Netherlands I was struck how so relatively underpopulated they were compared to the UK. Didn't get into any heavy traffic all the time I was there, shopping in supermarkets was so stress free, no packed aisles. Trains were quiet, could always get a seat even at rush hour. Don't you think it's a reasonable thing to question, as a small island with limited space for expansion of infrastructure, can we realistically sustain net immigration to the tune of the population size of Liverpool ( thankfully not scousers), every year ?

Not the best devils advocate argument

Belgium and the Netherlands are far more populated per square mile than the UK, and its not even close!

Obviously not been to the parts of the Netherlands I have been to. Rotterdam took us 45 minutes to travel 2 miles.

Englands far more over crowded than Belgium I’m afraid, admittedly we could pack out Scotland and Wales yet. We are over populated and underfunded if everyone paid their dues we wouldn’t be underfunded seems like nobody likes paying though except us mugs.

They should rename Huntingdon train station around this guy’s name. And maybe the driver too.

How could anyone object to that?

The guy is an absolute hero.

Even if on 'systems' it remains as Huntingdon, the signage at the station could be redone as Huntingdon-Zitouni or something, subject to the appropriate due-diligence of course.

We have enough everyday reminders of the scumbags in the world, would be good to have an everyday reminder and example of someone acting completely selflessly.
