Hurricane Milton

Thanks for the reply, I hope you all come through it safely and with as little damage as possible.

I was in Tampa in the early eighties and actually went to a football game. The Tampa Bay Rowdies v the Jacksonville Teamen. It ended up a draw and Archie Gemmill played for the Teamen.
Isn't that where Rodney Marsh went?

I remember him saying English football is a grey game played by grey people in grey weather.... something like that.

Looks like the damage from storm surge and wind has been minimal in comparison to the warnings originally stated upon approach. Whilst this is great in terms of reduced casualties and financial damage, it does raise the question many Floridians ask as to whether the mass evacuation was necessary and required.

I guess until daylight the extent won’t be an accurate picture, but I’ve not seen anything to suggest a large storm surge along the coastline. The only flooding seems to be from the large quantities of rainfall.

Hope everyone with friends or family there stays safe. My mate on holiday there with his wife and kids. He's sent me few videos from during the night

TikTok star Joe Malinowski, better known as Lieutenant Dan, appears to have survived the worst of the storm.

He has attracted viral fame for his continued defiance of orders from officials to evacuate, insisting he would be staying on his 20ft boat in Tampa Bay despite the devastating incoming hurricane.

++

He'll be on tv shows and could get a social media deal etc, millionaire for life if he chooses.

Seems like it's not been too bad, which is a relief. Not heard off my family members yet but I imagine that's because they've lost power, which they were expecting to happen anyway. They live right on the edge of Lake Tohopekaliga and they were most worried about flooding, which doesn't seem to have happened based on the storm chasers I've been watching who are driving around Osceola County and Polk County.

Well the mass evacuation was based on the storm being predicted to be greater than the one 2 weeks ago which brought wide spread flooding and major damage.
To not have issued evacuation orders and the worst happened would have been politically disastrous for those involved.

And in the Tampa area itself where the direct hit was predicted, the hurricane should be called Hurricane Nunez as it missed its intended target, thus preventing a worse situation in Tampa (though not in Sarasota)

I see Taylor Swift has donated $5m towards helping those affected by the hurricane. Yes; I know she can well afford it. But it's still a decent gesture by her.

Of course it could be anonymous. I applaud the gesture though.

Think it was George Michael who it came out after his death had been giving away millions but all on condition of anonymity.

On topic, if Florida is in the position at the end of this of debating whether the evacuation was even necessary then that will be a great result given the scenario it thought it was looking at.

Yes you're right on both counts. Rodney had left then but the staff still remembered him. I bought a t shirt with ", Soccer is just a kick in the grass" on it lol.
