Apparently the BBC did try to contact the parents after the initial complaint in May. Once by phone and once by email, but there was no response to either.

I'm assuming it's because the BBC wouldn't have paid them.

Possibly.
Or maybe there was a temporary patch up in their relationship with their child, or where the "facts" of what they had been originally told had been changed.
There does seem to have been a lot of miscommunication between them.

Assuming he recovers from his mental health issues and there are no further revelations I think he’ll be back doing HIGNFY or similar in a few months and back on the 10 o’clock news within a year.
