I'm not sure he's 'playing the depression card'. I think after events of the last seven days which may very well leave him without career, marriage, family and even his home and having it all play out in the media he'll have very genuine depression and other MH issues. I'm not sure he or anyone else is trying to say that makes him innocent or should be treated more leniently.

On your second point, it doesn’t, for some reason you’re suggesting it despite no-one else yet giving it as a reason or an excuse. If you were accused of doing it, suspended from work for it and had the entire country wondering if it was you for several days, whether you did it or not, I’m pretty sure you’d be depressed too though. Still doesn’t change no-one yet has used it as an excuse for doing anything in the first place.

I imagine that is absolutely correct, and having put himself on the pedestal of being 'the voice of the nation' his fall from grace will be harder and further than it otherwise would be. I don't see this as a cover up or him getting away with anything.

It’s some cover up isn't, investigating straight away, handing over to the police, restarting the investigation and making it the lead story on their main bulletins and Newsnight.
