Cambridge Blue is a nasty colourCambridge blue shirt and white nickers phwoar
typical CityIsn’t it cheating playing with 2 keepers?
I wouldn’t be sure about that being 100% the exact colour being described. The University’s Rugby Union club have a kit very similar to the Argentina football kit in design and colour, although their club blazer’s are indeed similar to the blue of the rowing club. Wikipedia says that the rowing club “added yellow” in the mid 20th century to “distinguish themselves” from the rugby club, and doing that would explain the two different shades although the shade has ended up being very similar to Eton Blue and there is a story that in the second boat race Cambridge turned up in white shirts but Oxford had dark blue shirts and a dark blue flag. Someone suggested getting a contrasting flag to mark the boat and an Eton Blue ribbon was sourced. Whether that became the regular colour is not known, however it seems odd that the colour is seemingly never described as green-blue in historical reports, always light-blue. And it’s odd that the rugby club use the shade they do.
I like the Telegraphic Address. It’s almost as if we were the only relevant football team in Manchester.Programme cover from City v Small Heath, 3rd September 1904 played at Hyde Road:
