Hyde Road Stadium

Martin Zero has done a video series walking in the Cornbrook culvert starting from where it joins the Manchester ship canal (or the Irwell as it did) all the way upstream to where it starts and is open, in West Gorton.
This episode, number 5, starts at Bennett Street on the site of the old Hyde Road football ground.
You can fast forward to around 7 mins 15 seconds to the City / Ardwick bit

Thanks for that. It was curiously fascinating .....

Go along Hyde Road to the junction with Bennett Street near where the railway crosses Hyde Road.
At that junction, the little bit of spare land is where the Hyde Road Hotel / City Gates pub was.
Turn onto Bennett Street and as soon as you go under the railway bridge the ground was on the left.
See the map I posted above your post
That’s brought back memories mate, lived just of Bennett St on Matthew’s St near the church as a boy.
Interestingly was on holiday in Thailand couple of weeks ago and talking to a couple, the wife worked at Dunlop on Matthew’s St. What are the odds, but I digress.

Does anyone know if there are pictures of Hyde Road from 1919-23 as that's when my Great grandfather first started watching City. I know there was a fire at the ground in 1920 and the main stand was destroyed

I cycled around Cowes Street and the surrounding area. I couldn't see the Aces pub or Thomas Street, where I was led to believe there is a plaque marking City's inception. I found photos online but nothing there.

Do you know if there is anything at Kirkmanshulme Lane or elsewhere? Thanks

Think this was maybe on Hyde Rd near railway bridge. But I could be getting mixed up about location as there was a plaque near railway bridge regarding , I think, either prison guards or police officers shot or wounded by IRA members in transit on their way to jail, which could then have been the jail on Hyde Rd. Sorry my memory is a bit sketchy on this.

The plaque was definitely on The Aces pub - and you are right about the one on the railway bridge over Hyde Road referencing the policeman killed in a Fenian attack on the carriage carrying Irish prisoners taking them to The Hyde Road gaol.
Many were round up and arrested and 3 found guilty of the attack / murder and hung - becoming known as the Manchester Martyrs
