Messi compared to Maradona

We won’t see another Messi for a long time. I used to love watching Ronaldinho, he made football look like a piece of piss in the early 2000’s. Messi came along and completely took football to another level. How many times have we been mesmerised by watching him tear teams apart? United in both champions league finals, Real numerous of times, City at the nou camp a few years ago, Arsenal at the nou camp. He gets plenty of stick about not winning anything for Argentina, but he’s carried them for years. He single handedly got them to the World Cup final in 2014. One day I hope we see someone as good as him at City . Barca fans have been spoilt for 15 years watching him.

You always get the odd person who claims they don’t rate messi (impossible to be true) simply for the shock factor. Normally it’s rags though with their unhealthy Ronaldo obsession. One friend of mine declared Messi was boring and predictable, completely stitched himself up when I pointed out, “he must be even better than I thought, everyone knows what he’s going to do but even then can’t stop him”

Never get the one club/league argument. People change that to suit an argument, it either adds to their greatness or in this case weirdly used against them. Even funnier when Messi has took the piss out of every club from every league in the champions league too. I agree on the international stage, that seems to be an Argentinian problem for years to be fair.

Maradona for me. he never played in a team anywhere near Messi's Barca, no where near. I genuinely believe if he had played in that team of 2008/11 no one would doubt it's Maradona (in Argentina it is anyway). To not rate Messi though is just unfathomable, easily the 2nd best player ever imo with 3rd place some distance behind him from what i ever saw ( Tony Philiskirk obv)

Rate both highly but Maradona in the 86 World cup reached a level that I had not seen since Pele in the 70 world cup.
Maradona and Pele the best two for me.

The game is about opinions... but, having said that it's absurd to rate Maradona above Messi.

Messi can do anything that Maradona could do and more. He'll also leave a legacy which lasts beyond the next century and most of his records wont be broken for a long, long time.

Pep would have kicked Maradona out of that Barca side for being unprofessional, like he did with Ronaldinho.

It's true that Maradona played in an age where teams simply didn't have the concentration of talent that they do now in the super club era, but that applied even more to the opposition. Maradona never faced sides as stacked with world class talent as Messi has over the last 10 years.

The other thing people never seem to mention that Maradona missed about 1/3 of every season because he was unfit and didn't look after himself. 250 league appearances in 10 years in Europe, admittedly sometimes in 18 team leagues, but he missed a lot of games. Messi's racked up 343 in the past 10 seasons.
