I'm starting my postgraduate study next month, 10 years after getting my MA, so doing an MSc as a top-up to get me back into the swing of things before getting on with a PhD.

Roman history here, local politics in 2ndC North Africa in fact - and I'm boring you all already.........

On the one hand I'm thinking, "I'll bet that's secretly fascinating"; on the other, I'm not ;-).

What are your sources for this kind of thing?

Re: I finished my PhD thesis

Theres far too much intelligence in this thread, its giving me a headache just reading it.

....and yes, it makes me feel dumb.

Good one :-))). I've actually only got a couple of A-levels, but I did like those letters I put after my name. They just have to be earned! Sounds better than Brucie Bonus G.C., H.P., G.H, and H.H.D. (grass-cutter, house-painter, general handyman, and heavily-harassed dad).

I actually like reading about Blues achievements (military, sports, academics, business &c.), and I'm very impressed. Do you have to give an oral defence (is that what it's called) of your thesis? I'd like to find out how it all works out for you.

Agree with blue1969. It's clear there are some very bright blokes on here. The ones who know they don't know everything always get my attention.

Yeah, once I submit the thesis in about 6 weeks it then gets sent off to my examiners, who in about 2 or 3 months' time will give me 'viva', the oral exam. Depending on who you get, it can be a daunting and confrontational experience, but I've been lucky in securing a couple of good examiners.

Good luck Leithblue, it's daunting starting out. It's worth it in the end (that's what I told myself when I nearly went blind reading microfilmed material).

what's the subject?

Oh, I'm just a boring old historian Ronnie - my speciality is Australian colonial history, specifically the period when convicts were shipped out there.

It's not often that reading a book review prompts me to dash out and buy it. Three or four years ago I bought 'The Commonwealth of Thieves' by Thomas Keneally and it turned out to be a memorable read. Impeccably researched, Keneally uses his writing skills as a foremost novelist to tell a great story of the founding of Australia which I take to be historically accurate to boot. I presume you've read it Dr Bango. What do you think?
Incidentally, lest any Bluemooners have got the impression from this that I am a highbrow type, they are mistaken. Only last night I bought 'Sully - The football thug who didn't give a fuck' from HMV and will read it this weekend.

Re: I finished my PhD thesis

Fantastic achievement.
Will it be published online - I'd be interested to read it?
Visited Trial Bay Gaol last year.

Re: I finished my PhD thesis

Congratulations. Never done a Phd, but worked in a computer centre where a lot of
phd students did their work. I can appreciate the work and effort you've put in. Hope you reap the dividends.

I'm not sure if it'll be online, but once it's finally done I might be able to send you a copy.

I didn't get to Trial Bay when I was in Oz, but Cockatoo Island and the Hyde Park Barracks are worth a look.

As for Keneally's Commonwealth of Thieves, it's an excellent book, he does bring the period to life. If you liked that, you might also like Inga Clendinnen's Dancing with Strangers and, of course, the aforementioned Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes.

Get in there.

Re: I finished my PhD thesis (and submitted it!)

Congratulations, i'm just about to embark on writing up my 4th year Zoology honours project.

Got all my data, just analysing it now, then i'll begin the write-up.

A month spent at Loch Lomond in the rain grappling with woodmice, midges and ticks.

'The effect of personality in small mammals on recapture rate'.
