I like Mark Hughes ...

Can talk the talk but don't believe he can walk the walk.

I am loving the way he is dismantling the squad, and addressing the obvious problem areas - it is something that has needed doing for a long time.

The first part of next season truly will define the man. I like him a lot, and hope he has what it takes to get an amazing collection of players to gel....because if they do....the world is our oyster.

Surviving the first 12 months seems to have done him good - he now seems more relaxed and smiles a lot more and for the moment the media seem to have accepted that he has kept his job and we are not faced with a daily barrage of stories about potential new managers - it's good to see him looking as though he is in control of our team and long may his good mood last.

Why oh why are we having a thread that can be turned into a Hughes in or out thread, when clearly the lines have been drawn and nothing has changed since we finished in May. Most people that what him out, do so not because the team was bad last year(in my view the best we have had since the 70s), but because their performances were disappointing. Until he can put right the performances on the field nothing will change and in fairness to him, right now that's not something we as a fan base can see, he might well be addressing them. That being said even Alan Ball could talk a good pre-season.

I cant quite understand why some of the anti-Hughes brigage suddenly like him - what exactly has he done since the end of last season to persuade everyone that hes suddenly a far better coach given the fact the biggest gripe was him not being able to get good results despite the money he's spent?

For the record Ive never had a problem with him because I actually think he can take us to the top but we have to give him time - last season was very much a transition year. Sadly i can already see, 5 games in and the results arent 5 wins that he'll get a barrage of abuse about how much he's spent and how crap he is as a coach.

Sorry to sound negative but this is what happened last season, hopefully we can all get behind him because its definately the start of something great.

I wasn't particularly excited when we appointed Hughes as manager, and at times last season he left me exasperated (particularly with the away form, which was indisputably woeful) but on the whole I was on his side.

There were glimpses of better times ahead with our performances at Eastlands and, well, I was sick and tired of us changing manager all the time. He's certainly endeared himself to me (not that that really matters, of course) with his handling of the media and he seems to be pretty focused, not taking shit off players or rival managers, including Ferguson.

Next season there will be an inordinate amount of pressure on him, but he seems to be handling well thus far. My only concern is that every time we don't win some fans will scream that he's not up to the job. That's just the nature of modern football fans I guess.

The owners have clearly given him their full backing, so it would be nice if the fans did so too (which I think on the whole they have). That's not to say he's beyond criticism, far from him. But we're got a veritable shitstorm of negative publicity heading our way next season from all quarters, so we need to group together and judge his performance in May, not before.
