Me and my mate walked down Whitworth St on the day (heading towards Oxford Road to Maine Road) and on the spur of the moment, as the parade was passing, joined in the remainder of the way (joining in with the chant "oh when the gays, go marching in, oh when the gays go marching in....) and stayed around Albert Square. On the day of the 5th round FA cup tie in 1988 (?) a huge gay rights demonstration took place in Manchester. A number of the young governors charged into the parade attacking demonstrators. Stewards chased after the YGs who led them into pre planned ambush where many of the goveners came out of pubs round Albert Sq and battered the stewards. After the match people walking back towards the uni from town where smacked by blues returning from Maine Rd I was horrified to see a lesbian couple thrown out into the traffic on Oxford Rd mercifully the drivers breaked in time. One of the very few occasions in my life I've felt ashamed to be a blue. The 80s was another country.
Your account of the day is the first time I've heard of that.
