Sad news. He was a lovely man and gave his time freely. I met him a few times over the years and did an interview with him when he was still working at the PFA. I've re-posted it today:
I’ve heard the news that Ian Mellor has passed away at the age of 74 and so I wanted to pay tribute by publishing an interview I did with him several years ago and also provide a few biograph…

My thoughts are with his family and close friends.
Very sad news indeed. First came across him playing for the reserves at Maine Road and him being listed on the team sheet with (am) in brackets. This denoting he was an amateur. I believe he was still a postman at (I think) Wythenshawe office at the time. I always knew him as 'legs' not spider as that's what my dad christened him at the time.
He was an integral part of the team that almost won the league and his was the place taken by Rodney Marsh.
Sad news - 74 is no age.
I remember his very early days playing for the reserves and being shown on the programme as Ian Mellor (Amateur).
Looked an awkward player in his youth, but went on to have a decent career.
RIP Ian. Condolences to his family.
I think he was the first City player that gave me his autograph.
I went to school with his nephew (who, just so happened to be the best footballer in the school).
R.I.P Ian.
