ID cards.

That is absolutely NOT the purpose of it.

The purpose of it is to start to track and ultimately control everything we do.
Facebook, Google, Youtube and every store with a loyalty card are already doing all that. Your goose is already well and truly cooked.

Nothing to fear except a complete and utter waste of money. It's just a threatened gimmick used to pander to the Reform sheep, to make it look like they're going to get tough on immigrants and benefit cheats, imho.

That's a fair point and in the short term, I'd tend to agree with you.

But I think you have to consider where this may lead. In the start it could be little to worry about for law abiding citizens but there's a huge possibility - inevitability perhaps - for scope creep. Each incremental erosion of privacy may be sold as being necessary for reason x or y, innocuous enough at the time. But gradually, freedoms will be eroded further and further.

Anyone who thinks this has anything whatsoever to do with stopping illegal immigration is kidding themselves. This is about government control. A socialist big government wanting as much control over its citizens as it can get. Tracking what you do, where you go, who you meet, what you post, what you eat, how much you drink. No more anonymous posts on social media, no more criticism of government policies.

Look at Mahmood latest proposals to inhibit repeat protests. Overtly about Palestine Action. In reality it's about stopping protests outside asylum seekers' hotels.

I'd be equally worried no matter which type of government is in power, but, I believe it's just a gimmicky idea being thrown around by Labour to appease Reformites. It won't get implemented as there's no money to do it.

Look at Mahmood? She's just trying to be a good Tory as most Labour politicians seem to do when they get some power.

Those against it need to open their eyes to the issues uncontrolled illegal immigration is having around the globe and why it needs to be stopped.

Even their beloved EU has said no more and introduced the EES.

Those for it need to open their eyes and realise it won't - indeed can't - make any difference whatsoever to uncontrolled illegal migration

Dreaming if you think otherwise. Seriously you imagine small boat immigrants will think "oh I won't bother now because I don't have a digital ID"? Or we will be able to immediately deport people who arrive without one? The blockers to deporting them remain exactly the same as they are now whether they arrive with a digital ID or not. It's ludicrous to imagine it will make any difference whatsoever.

Bearing in mind the plans for this originated in 2016 as part of the Smart Borders Package (guess which EU member was one of the biggest advocates for this). Many countries have introduced a similar system over the last few years eg Thailand.

It is a method to help protect borders and particularly helps identify overstayers from 3rd nation countries.

I don’t think stopping anonymous posts on social media is a bad idea, it might go some way to reducing some of the nastiness in the cess pit? Having said that I only have WhatsApp, and Bluemoon of course.

At present, apparently one of the draws for asylum seekers to come here is that they can find work easily in the black economy. The employers are actually the ones breaking the rules allowing this to happen. If there is a system in place that helps reduce the ability for this to happen, then it will be a deterrent. not a solution, but something that could help.
