ID cards.

I’ve read it’s going to cost billions. At the same time as all of our bills going up and cuts to lots of public services.

Was this ever mentioned when labour were campaigning before the election?
There was a great deal not mentioned before Labour 'won' the election.

But they’re supposed to check now, that a person has the right to work here. An undocumented ‘illegal’ working for £1.25 an hour will still be a tempter for some (and we’ll all be working for that, once Nigel has thrown them all out)…

Yes, but check what? A letter from a utility with a name and address on it? if you are not ‘looking’ to check that hard, then any ‘proof’ can pass muster. A photo ID with biometric information that you are required by law to log onto your systems prior to hiring someone is a deterrent. Arguing that you did check and ‘how was I to know, I’m trying to run a business here’ is a defence if there is no easy or definitive means of proving residency.

I’m not saying it is guaranteed solution, it just makes it more difficult. If it is easier to get work here then other European countries who have National ID cards then that makes the UK a more attractive destination. There is also a security issue vs other European countries.

I am of the view that we are in a digital age with an increasingly digital economy and that a digital ID wallet is inevitable irrespective of the illegal migration issue. We have already introduced online safety verification so a digital ID is a logical step.

I am pretty sure what ever public support there is for this won’t survive a week or two of the media going apeshit while simultaneously demanding that we stop letting people into the country, but that’s just par for the course these days :)

Do Id cards help France with illegal immigrants or stopping them?

It doesn’t seem to have done anything to stop huge amounts of people entering France illegally or working illegally
Exactly, they want to pass through all countries with ID card to get to UK where it is much easier.

I can't get my head around people arguing its un-British who also moan when they have to take 2 utility bills in their name to the Post Office to obtain a small loan yet those same people spill loads of personal info to Pornhub so they can watch mucky movies - I mean I know I trust the DVLA with my data ref driving more than I would some overseas dodgy platform.
As I said previously for some it isn't about ID it's about chosing to have one over being mandated.

someone using a website, be it porn or argos have chosen to have potential data collecting or tracking.

I have 3 forms of Photo ID, my passport, alcohol liscence and work ID, I carry 2 around with me weekdays and one all the time as is required, I don't need another form of ID

Make it voluntary and it will be recieved better but thenit makes ot pointless, which it is anyway

If you have nothing to hide then there is no issue and I'm all for it - production of ID is mandatory at many sites I visit with work (especially UK Government) - driving license is enough for me, but clearly driving licenses are actually become less universal as they were as more choose to eschew cars - an unfortunate consequence. So go for it I say!

And agreed it will have little or no effort on illegal workers and criminal gangs

It's another dent to illegal workers and criminal gangs, its not a major deal. we just now live in a time where everyone has to be outraged by any government decision.
I don't see why it matters because what will it do that current forms of ID don't already do? You can't get a job without a form of ID so it's already effectively mandatory.

We already have digital ID because you can get a PASS card for those who don't have a passport or driving licence and need to prove their age.

Sharing data with private companies may not be compulsory but it is near impossible to avoid.

Like I said earlier, I want to find out more information before forming an opinion. What information do you not want to share with Govt? Any different types of data you do not want to be available in one place?
I've worked on government ID products and to share personal information across departments can be very tricky, as you have to have a data sharing agreement in place and those aren't easy to negotiate.

I will be outraged when I am stopped by the police and have committed an offence automatically by not having my ID card. Like my license I will haver to produce it, if I do not I will have to attend a police station.

Right now, you have to be suspected of a crime for them to do that, in future it will automatically be a crime, not having ID.

They tell you all how scared to be then tell you their solution.

It won’t have any effect at all on illegal workers and criminal gangs.

it will. This will make it much much more difficult for individuals without legal status to gain employment.

All working adults will be required to present a digital ID when starting a new job. This ID will be linked to a central database.

Are governments not allowed to think on their feet and adapt policies to developing situations?

Section 50 of the Police Reform Act allows the police to ask for your name and address if they believe you are, or have been, engaging in anti-social behaviour.

with this it will be madatory, dangerous path into a police state

Make it voluntary and it will be recieved better or for anyone with citizenship a choice and compulsary for people waiting on approval to remain or on short term visa such. as student or work ones

That’s just an argument for choice, but even a voluntary scheme will not be ‘voluntary’ if companies, both public and private, require you to use a Govt ID to access services. The left/right argument is redundant as a digital economy will require a standardised ID. Even the right to vote is tied to a photo ID these days. If you make a fundamental right such as voting dependent on a photo ID the Govt has to introduce a standardised ID to ensure equal voting access for everyone.

It might help if all employers followed the rules but the ones who don't now will continue regardless. Having the law is stage one, enforcing it is the trick. It's against the law to shoplift isn't it?
