IFAB plans to end time-wasting.

I wholeheartedly support 30 minutes of game time each half and as has been said, adjusting this once it becomes clear whether this amounts to a similar length of game. The time wasting is IMO the most frustrating, needless part of the game and this is an easy change that would stop it dead.

The only occasional joy I get from time wasting is when a team has been blatantly partaking for twenty+ minutes, only to concede an equaliser or winner. Then suddenly the offending team takes every throw and free kick instantly and pushes on. All the better when it’s against City. Costa Rica I think in the World Cup vs Brazil was ridiculous. Think Costa Rica wasted time from kick off and conceded twice in injury time. Sucked in.

In the Australian Rules Football we have 20 minutes of ball in play each quarter which can last 25-35 minutes real time. System works fine. Obviously the big discrepancy is due to goals and stoppages being much more frequent in that game. The league has sort of flip flopped about whether to have the stadium game clock count down the time left from 20:00 to 0:00 or just start at 0:00 and continue to count up with only officials who sound the siren (not on field umpires) knowing how long left to indicate end of quarter/game. Does make an intense finish when it’s a close game and nobody knows how long is actually left.

Good debate and I’ve learned two new phrases, “boils my piss” and “grinds my ears”, put a smile on my face.

Another reason why I just cant buy into the champions league. Matches involving the usual euro elite are maddening. Every little blatant dive in the ground and roll around takes 3 mins to get the game going again and you know as soon as it gets to 80 mins the game is effectively over. Sub after sub. Its whoever can tactically cheat the best wins. That one rule change would drastically change it for the better, the game should not be stopped, one on and one off at the same time.

If the ball is in play, its up to the other team to do something about it, that is very different from the manager that tells and then sends the player coming off, to the furthest part of the pitch before he's subbed, and he then "jogs" at tortoise pace to the line. Then there's the feigning injury to get the game stopped, some of it can be stopped easily, some of it can't, so give the game a set "in play" time and work from there.

Quite right, but I have to admit seeing players just holding off their opponent by the corner flag with no intention of playing the ball does wind me up*

*unless it's against United when City are taking the piss out of them for 5 minutes.

Just wondering how people feel about Newcastle doing a bit of time wasting towards the end of this game if they're still winning?

They’ll need to waste about 30 minutes. We could see the record for most minutes added to a game if the score remains the same.

Alty fan sorted it on 55 mins tonight by giving out a warning and then a card for wasting time. Different to at our place when teams come and waste time from the word go, and the ref only bothers to have a word with their keeper when the clock gets to 88mins.
