Ilkay Gundogan - 2017/18 performances

He’s in danger of falling into that Nasri, Džeko, Jovetić category of players where the talent is clearly there but the consistency, application or mentality isn’t for some reason.

He’s not the player I thought we were buying. He’s much better at some things (movement in the attacking third, finishing, heading) but a lot worse at what I had perceived his strengths to be (looking after the ball, offering an option, dictating the tempo).

It doesn’t help that he just switches off sometimes.

I think opposing teams will look at our midfield and think “KDB is going to press us into a mistake and punish us. Silva is going to literally run rings around us. Fernandinho is likely to leave us in a heap at some point.” The same was true when we had Yaya and de Jong out there, nobody fancied that battle. I don’t think they will be intimidated by Ilkay in the same way.

Dzeko and Nasri were key players that helped the team to win 2 PL titles & few cups.

So comparing them to Gundogan is not right " yet" .

Players that randomly became scape goats.

Gundogan's major role is be the best back up midfielder in the league to the best CMs in the league.

Which he is.

Was running the game until Kompany and Otamendi threw it away realistically. Don't miss the ball then lose pogba then lose smalling and we finish the game talking about Ilkay scoring one of the etihads best ever goals to win the title.

hes a good player, but for me i just don't understand what he actually offers to the team. whats his role meant to be ?
Possibly the only midfielder we have that arrives very late in the box. If you look at the goals he gets you will see he's similar to what Lampard did for years. His main issue is due to injuries he hasn't established himself into a particular role. I think that David Silva's unbelievable consistency and quality surprised Pep who bought Ilkay to play in that role. I also think too many fans on here are being a tad unfair to him - the games we have lost have been more down to a dip in performance from our centre backs and fullbacks rather than Ilkay. He's not a player that dives in but his possession stats are right up there as well as scoring some great goals. We need a Barca type performance from him although he may be on the bench for this one as I think Bernardo would be a better option against Liverpool as he will pin back their wide men and also keeps the ball very well and offers a goal threat.

Not surprised he's started virtually all the games we've lost this season. However, I think he should be given another season, unless we receive a offer in the region of 40m plus.

This is a really disingenuous statistic, to the point where anyone seriously suggesting that playing Gundogan we're more likely to lose has to be considered an idiot.

He's started 24 games and lost 6.

Those 6 are Liverpool at Anfield x2, Manchester United, Wigan, and 2 games Pep pretty much threw against Shakhtar and Basel.

So rule out the 2 games Pep made 10 changes for and didn't take seriously, and you've got 3 losses in 21 starts.

Those 21 starts include an incredible performance vs. Napoli away from home, probably MOTM against Spurs, and a very good game with 2 goals which sealed the Basel game and let us rest 90% of the team for the cup final, which he also played in.

He was also a very good Fernandinho replacement when we beat Chelsea and Arsenal back to back without conceding a goal.

Fact is, Pep brings him in for big games, and surprise surprise, we've lost a couple.

He loses to many duals for the ball. Probably a legacy from injuries but our whole game plan is based on absolute domination of the ball and when he is pressed he spills it too often.

Considered the notion to not bring him in for big games then? I quite like him but don't think he is quite good enough for the bigger games. As you rightly pointed out that he has played in some of the games we have fielded weakened teams as a case to defend him although it is then up to him to still perform. If anything he should be standing out in them teams. I wouldn't use Chelsea and Arsenal as a defence considering neither team rarely crossed the half way line. I don't think Saturday was his fault, Liverpool to a degree as well. Pep shouldn't have picked him for Liverpool simple as that.

When he plays we always have more possession and control, that's why he comes in, and he certainly doesn't lose the ball under pressure. Could he be more aggressive in 50/50 duels, yes, probably, but that's not his game and he presses very intelligently when out of possession.
