Ilkay Gundogan - 2017/18 performances

Hes being scapegoated.

He was put in a stupid role which exposed us, but it's not his fault he didn't turn into a brilliant defensive winger who could bail out Walker, or suddenly become a rapid box to box who can cut out counterattacks.

Hes 27/28, he has a game, and you pick him to play that game. He didn't do that well but most of the things being levelled against him are products of him being selected and played in a weird position.

It's because he doesn't have a lot of credit in the bank already. He's fine in a game where we are not tested. He's a neat footballer.

But in intense games he sometimes struggles to make an impact. And in games where he is supposed to be the tempo setter (games where KDB and Silva don't play), he doesn't do it and is a big reason behind why we have never really looked in control against weaker opposition in the cups (despite winning it oddly enough).

I wrote a post literally saying the same thing but I’m not sure if I posted it a few months back. I think I never hit send because I don’t like attacking our players but it’s so true though.

Those comments he made took whatever hope I was holding out for him completely out the window. Still laughing at the thought of him playing in Fernandinhos role.

He was the worst of a bad bunch.

Needs to be replaced in the summer.

Pity Zinchenko didn't play last night.

He and Gundogan could have passed it sideways to each other 100 times and he'd have a glowing rating in the paper.

He is a great payer but we have to know when to play him and how.

When we face WBA at home and are passing 900 times he is the man to do 150 of them of course he wont be pressed and most of those passes are just to waste time, have possession when we are 3-0 up anyway. In these games he can sometimes not often but somtimes arrivel well into the box, score maybe, give an assist etc.

But away to Anfield no way, and especially not in a strange position for him. Why not left back seriously....

I want some hardworking, agressive, strong midfielder in the summer with good passing ability on top. Sometimes KDB plays way too deep imo when he could create even more closer to the goal.

Gundogan will be a great squad player for the right type of games we will have loads of those games when we dominate big time and want to pass opponents to death and they will be scared to do what Pool usually does.
