Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

Sorry but I just don’t rate this guy. He looks to slow things down every time. He was at walking pace within a couple of minutes of coming on yesterday. He seems reluctant to chase back in games. Sometimes I have noticed he looks away to avoid a pass if he has an opponent anywhere near him.
I get the feeling you only watch Gundogan, looking for errors. Because to highlight him for criticism based on that game, and nobody else, is a really clear sign of an agenda.

Did better than Silva (not difficult) but I would have much preferred to see Sane come on, with Bernardo moving central. A midfield trio of Danilo, Gundogan and Bernardo is something I can live without.

Was the only midfielder on the pitch for us yesterday who got his foot on the ball in the centre of midfield and looked to orchestrate some decent possession on the edge of the Chelsea box. The rest of the team spent the whole game smashing the ball wide which made our whole game predictable and easier to defend against.

Nope. If you read my post it clearly states games , plural. For where this club wants to be he is not good enough, if he was, he would not be rotated so often. Just watch him next time he plays, probably Wednesday and you will see my points are valid

Fair play to Gundo, he's been consistently excellent for a month now. Didn't think I would be saying this but he's clearly a better option than David Silva at the moment

1st point, have you considered that this may have been under instruction?

2nd point, can't say I've noticed, half a yard slower than our other midfielders perhaps but doesn't shirk.

3rd point, could it be a case of him assesing how close an opponent is before potentially receiving a pass?

1)So when he starts a game his instructions will be to slow things down. The fact is when we play at walking pace we never seem to penetrate so unlikely he is being asked to following instructions.
2)He is slower than our other midfielders and does not track back like the other players do , occasionally yes, but not on a regular basis. An example was yesterday when he lost the ball he did not chase back, instead lifted his head in frustration and left the job to someone else.
3)Hmm , not thought of that one because amazingly other players are reluctant to pass it to someone who is not looking and tend to choose to pass the ball to someone else who is looking. By the time he has “ assessed” the situation the ball is 2 moves on.
