Gundogan is a good player. No doubt.
The problem is that Gundo is past his peak at a time when the game is swinging further away from his skill set.
The game is getting bigger, stronger, faster, more direct in the final third today. When he was at Dortmund, he could probably hang with that. However, we are years and serious injuries beyond that point and I think Gundo, like Sergio and Ferna, is coming into his last year at City. Luiz is certainly an inexpensive addition into that midfield when we need some snap and some energy.
Gundo will head back to Turkey and get a few more years in front of a friendly crowd in 2021, and I will be glad for him. This next season will, I believe, be like David Silva’s this year...a swan song full of sporadic games.
