Haven't seen the actual clip so don't know if the words have been twisted. If Pep has publicly said he's overweight then I don't necessarily agree with that approach.

Should've been a 1v1 conversation, tear the lad a new arsehole by all means but protect him publicly. The amount of know-it-alls who will jump on this now and publicly fat shame him and abuse him. Seems a lovely lad who's come back from recurring injury problems. Give him a week or two and he will be all good. Probably had a blowout or two after the France game.

That is very disappointing, a big transfer fee, followed by a long injury, which he recovered from just in time for the World Cup and then this. Pep has done the right thing exposing this, if Phillips doesn’t show a desire to get a starting position he will quickly find his whole career unravelling.
His Christmas meal will be a single Ryvita.

Agree with this. The earlier 'didn't arrive in a condition to train' was more than enough. He has overdone it.

These are his exact words:-
" “He’s not injured - he arrived overweight. I don’t know. He didn’t arrive in the condition to do training sessions and to play."

Just seen it properly. Disgraceful by the manager that is. Our game has come a long way in terms of body image and mental health. Not a good look at all seeing the best coach in the world publicly air that. The poor lad will be jeered by opposition fans for the rest of his career for that.

Played at his first World Cup, probably ate a bit more fibre and salt than usual afterwards to celebrate with family. His body will retain that and show up on the scales. Pep should've left that to the people that know what they're doing, ignorant comments like that belong on the Med.

I understand what you are saying, but do we actually know the full facts?

There is a possibility that something worse has happened and to say weight and to half-blame the England backroom staff is a cover.

For example, I read in the World Cup Chesney (the Poland keeper) was essentially sacked by Arsenal when he was younger, as he was caught smoking in the changing rooms!

Perhaps when injured at the start of the season Phillips had been partying hard (alcohol perhaps?) and that showed up in testing.... Pep wouldn't want to come out and say that, so he has gone with the weight issue instead... but only really he and the player and a select few medical people will know the truth and we have to be accepting of that.

Disgraceful? Referencing someone who is paid eyewatering amounts of money to play football as "overweight" has fuck all to do with 'body image'. As for 'mental health', do you seriously believe Phillips doesn't have sufficient resilience to cope with a mild rebuke regarding his lack of fitness and the possibility of some piss-taking from the terraces? If that was the case, I wouldn't want him anywhere near a City team. For the record, I don't believe for a second it will affect him other than to act as further incentive to get into shape double-quick.

Pep cannot be accused of not supporting players publicly. He protects them better than any other manager. In this case he has factually answered a question. Nobody else came back overweight and the fact that it is a player that has been supported by the club through injury and has contributed so little in his time with us means that this is unusual and a natural disappointment. As others have said, the lad should have been tearing up trees to be back as fit as possible and ready to help. The fact that he isn‘t says a great deal more about him than it does about Pep.
