Insomnia

How's everyone sleeping in this bloody heat..any tips other than a cold flannel rub down through the night

I'e been struggling to get a decent night's sleep for the past few years.
I've mentioned on one of these threads about it a few times.

'Sleep hygiene' is better than it ever has been, in the main brought on by eating earlier and bringing the time I go to bed down considerably.
I train/run most evenings so physically I should drop into slumber....but never happens.
Also tried magnesium glycerinate: this seems to one make me drowsy at first but still had that disco going off in my head. Of late (and hasn't helped with my mother passing away recently) it's worsened. I'd had two nights with not one minute of sleep, so by day/night 3 I'd probably manage to get a little out of sheer exhaustion.

Finally spoke to a Dr about it last week as I felt I need some kind of professional intervention/advice.
Mentioned I didn't want to go down the chemical route if I could help it (melatonin or that aforementioned zoplicone.

I pushed the idea of visiting a sleep clinic and she seemed very. empathetic. But all she could offer at this stage was for me to carry on doing what I'm doing and try having Chamomile tea before bed!!

However, the last two nights have been the first consecutive nights decent sleep Ive had in years.
I grabbed some herbal sleep tablets from the supermarket, taking them alongside the mags and also put on a podcast in bed to help slow down my thoughts.
With the cooler weather too, one (or a combination) of these things may be working. I've ordered some of that tea btw.

Will also order a summer duvet next year (and I may have moved by then so will purchase a new bed with a decent mattress).

Had that sleepy feeling this morning: the soft cloud feeling rather than the jaded sleepiness you get with no sleep whatsoever.

Hoping to make it 3 nights in a row tonight.

I'll be honest, I always thought the herbal tablets were nothing more than placebos, but something has kicked in!

I don’t have insomnia but really mad dreams/nightmares that continually wake me up, when I get back to sleep the dream quite often picks where it finished, it’s like a soap opera, sometimes two or three episodes.

Dreams have started waking me up..sleep definitely gets worse with age

I read the other day that there is a new drug that has been approved called daridorexant (brand name quviviq) that has been approved for daily use for long term chronic insomnia. Saying thst, I have been on Zolpidem (similar to Zopliclone) for 7 years and still here so can’t be that bad. Whether it will do long term damage though I don’t know. I have had chronic insomnia for more than 10 years.

I was sent a link to that a few days ago mate, it seems (the last no I read) you have to go through CBT first before they’ll consider prescribing it which put me off a bit.

I think sometimes people just need to accept that they won't get or need as much sleep as others.
Worrying about, or trying to force sleep makes things worse.

As long as i get about 4.5 to 5 hours a day, i'm fine.
I've always been first up as a child and same now as an adult. I sometimes envy people who have long lie in's.
However, it does mean i get more done.
It has it's advantages, like going fishing or doing early shifts. However, i don't do them these days, so just end up surfing the net. (why i tend to post very late/early mornings etc)

So now when i do need to get up early and haven't manged to get to sleep, i just accept that i'm going to be tired that day and not worry. Even if i then struggle to get to sleep that night, i just remind myself that i WILL sleep eventually.

I did go three days straight without sleep once, and started to suffer waking dreams/hallucinations. Slept like a baby the forth day!

One technique i can pass on came from somebody who meditates. He told me to imagine i'm in a circle, and the thoughts that are keeping me awake are like intruders. You have to learn to stop the thoughts by pushing them away. When your mind then becomes calmer, start thinking about your breathing.
Slow your breathing, but breath slightly deeper. Each time you blow out, count your breath. When you get to twenty, start the count again. Do this to you either fall asleep, or get bored. Either way, you will be more relaxed!

(If all else fails, just read this long post!!!) :)

It’s now 4.11 am I’ve been up since 5.30 am , and have a 12 hour shift to look forward too at 7 am…

I get insomnia at least once a month, it’s something I really could do without , should say I got two hours sleep on Sunday night ….

Is there a cure for it ?

i sleep quite well, i cut coffee out in the afternoons. ive never done meditation but i jsut try not to think about anything in particular (which is the tricky part) and let me mind wander on its own then after a minute or two i know im in like a half dream state and usually thats it im off to sleep. always an early riser, now its the dog waking me at 5.30 to go for a walk. i believe magnesium is also good, ive used that after football games, training.

Had one of these last night , not had one for ages as they can leave you a little groggy first thing but I didn’t have to be up early this morning , worked a treat
