Inter (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

That may well be the most disciplined and savvy defence that's played at the Etihad in years. Anybody not giving them credit needs to take the sky blue specs off. We needed to be sharper into the tackle, sharper in our passes, just generally more up for it, for sure. But it's not only on us. They were very fast in transitioning, precise in their passing, often one touch (us almost never!) to get the ball upfield as fast as possible. The very opposite of us in fact. They could have won it — Mykitaryan (or however you spell his name) should have put that ball in the net, from that range, rather than blasting it over the bar. Their defence was completely caught out once, and once only — perfect ball onto Gundo's head. He really should have done better on that. Otherwise they had our number. A few half chances. Phil could have done better.
Nothing disastrous. I'll take it for the time being. That was one of the best teams in the competition, in my view.

Agreed, a very good side and like nearly all Italian sides very savvy. We are usually slow starters to a season but have done pretty well so far. In the usual group stages we'd probably have played some cannon fodder and won 5-0.
Avoid defeat against Arsenal and beat Watford and it will have been a great start to the season.

Well that was fucking dreadful. Love to know what our gameplan was tonight as none of the players seemed to know either. We were only ever going to break them down on the flanks where our wingers barely tried to beat a man or supply. We moved the ball slowly and predictably and our pressing out of possession was really poor. Far too easy for Inter to get through and get into attacking positions.

Not as if they put in a defensive masterclass either, they weren't anything out of the ordinary, they just stuck to their task, didnt make mistakes and had a comfortable and relatively trouble free night.

Only positive from that is we didnt lose as we really should have.

We didn't look too clever against Brentford either, we only scored then from a flukey deflection and a long ball from Ederson, we really have to find a way of creating more in games, keeping possession for the sake of it gets us nowhere.

We were okay, but not much more. They were well organised and we lacked ideas which made it the game it ended up being… stale, mate.

Ha, you might be right but it was a proper tactical masterclass tonight. Could not help but admire it.
I agree.Toughest game we’ve faced for quite some time. Overall think a draw was fair but as the game wore on it seemed clear only a bit of magic would win it and Gundo was stood there with a wand looking at the hat but the fucking rabbit never came out.and
Disappointed with Savinho as he had a few chances to create/shoot but didn’t quite deliver.
I expect Inter to go a long way and of course we will get better.

We had 3 very good chances to win

Second best tonight but we should have won it in the end. Inter were very good and I’m happy enough with a point.

Agreed. I can admire from a distance.

It's like London. I like to see it every now and again, and can appreciate it to some extent, but, fuck me, I don't want to live there.
I do think we have to take into account the context of the match. Inter away at the Etihad against arguably the favourites along with Real Madrid.

I think in most matches they are a lot more expansive, but Inzaghi obv wanted to keep it tight at the back but retain a threat going forward and there subs late on were also attack minded.

I doubt we will be going gung ho on Sunday. Sometimes being a good manager is adapting to circumstances. We have played them twice now and there has been little to choose between the two sides, Inzaghi is clearly doing something right.

It’s a shame you missed it pal as it was a real high quality match between two very evenly matched sides.

The tactics were lethargic. Pep was lethargic. The players were lethargic. It happens, but more concerning for me is how easily teams are playing through our midfield time and time again. Someone in the match thread mentioned it, but it feels like with Haaland up front and him not being ‘built’ to press like Jesus or Alvarez, everyone behind him has to cover more ground, and we don’t have the legs to do that. Rodri, Bernardo, Gundo, Phil, KDB, etc., aren’t ‘ground eaters’ for lack of a better word. The player I think could help in this regard is Nunes, but it seems that Pep doesn’t trust him, so I’m not sure what the solution is. For all of Rice’s downsides, the huge bid we made in the summer makes much sense from a tactical standpoint.

We’re so spoiled at home that a draw feels like a loss, but there’s undoubtedly a lot to work on this week.
That’s not the cause of transitions or us being played through.

We get transitioned on because we give the ball away in stupid areas when too many players are ahead of the ball. Kev caused at least two really dangerous ones in the first half through doing it. Rodri also caused one.

I also think by not deploying any over lapping full back at any point that we condense the build up through the middle. Play becomes stodgy and when we lose it, we are exposed because of how many players the opposition has in central areas.

I was sat in a bar with the other screens showing PSG against Girona. I couldn't help glancing across at it from to time. Now you want to see shit, that was shit! Hackney Marshes level at times. Our game, by contrast, was cagey, but very technical.

So pleased I didn’t haul my sorry rotting carcass to The Etihad for the new format of The Champions League. Although listening to TNT wax lyrical and some people on here appreciating a “tactical masterclass” from Inter is mystifying. It shows why Serie A has been going backwards since the early 90’s. Some of their teams will occasionally bore the shit out of everyone all the way to a European final, but it’s rare. Both teams were poor and 0-0 was about right. Early season stuff. Now we just have to wonder if it was an ok result in this “new” format. If I wasn’t a City fan I’d have watched Coventry v Spurs.

A performance as insipid as that bloody awful kit. We moved the ball forward far too slowly, that's when we did go forward rather than to the side. There is also a marked reluctance to actually shoot when the opportunity ariises and elect for a pass instead.
They defended very well in great numbers but they only had to jog back in order to get everyone back as we crept forward. Luckily for us they were crap at shooting.
A disappointing result with a couple of tough away games to come.
Reluctant to shoot yet we had 22 goal attempts. Only three teams in this round have taken more shots.

In the league we are averaging 16.5 shots per game this season, with only Brighton having a better average at 16.8.

Last season we averaged 18.2 in the league and were second to Liverpool at 20.8.

City are not afraid to shoot but they do try to choose the moment. It has worked for us over several seasons.

Inter are no mugs and will qualify for last 16 with us. This was probably our hardest game and we just about did enough to justify winning. It also helps us prepare for Sunday rather than a routine 5-0 stroll as Arsenal will play the same way sitting deep though they aren’t as good as inter.

On another note the kit is awful, the ref was the usual CL standard, the time keeping was a joke and good to see Phil back. Roll on Sunday.

Each to their own but that's not an opinion myself nor anybody around me in the ground seemed to share. Half the south stand turned their attention to a beach ball for a large period in the second half, a crowd doesn't do that if they're witnessing a high quality match.
