Interview with Khaldoon on the OS...

I had a bit of a pop in another thread yesterday about City's apparent poor communications strategy.

I was particularly critical of Garry Cook and his feeble attempts at public speaking and in dealing with the media.

However, having seen the Chairman's interview, we have the answer right under our noses.

Absolutely brilliant and inspirational speech, one that Cook should watch hundreds of times, and learn from.

We are in safe hands after all.

We are indeed. In terms of strategy I have no worries - Khaldoon is calm, measured, able, inspiring and sensible. And he is right that, when you step back from the hysteria, significant progress has been made.

My worry is the day to day leadership - the tactics, if you will. Cook is excellent at some things but he is not, IMO, a good CEO. Terrible with the press and the uncertainty over the manager WITHIN the club (until recently) has been poorly handled. (To be clear - I don't give a monkey's what the media say/think about that, it's the lack of certainty for players and staff that bothers me.) Even if no final decision had been taken, which is my take on things, the situation could have been far better and less damagingly handled.

Lessons need to be learned from this. I wouldn't want to get rid of Cook necessarily - I think he has a lot to offer - but I do think we would benefit from the presence of an experienced football executive. Marwood doesn't seem to be that man for me - his role is more technical (scouting and so forth). Not suggesting we should get rid of Marwood - he is valuable too, if only for the signing of Adam Johnson - so that suggests we need another person in there as an experienced head. But would that be too many confusing layers of management? Shame Khaldoon can't be here full time. That would solve the problem at a stroke.

I can see where you are coming from, but I feel we already have too many layers of management as it is without adding even more.

Successful organisations have to be lean, flexible, responsive and decisive... this is NOT done by committee... it is done by leaders.

Cook is not a leader. I doubt if Marwood is either. Throw in Rigg the Technical director, and we have a lot of "plodders".

I'd keep Marwood for his football knowldege, but we need an inspirational CEO.

Bernstein was great at the job, but I'm not siggesting we bring him back, but maybe David Dein or Peter Kenyon would give us that edge when we are swimming in a world of sharks.

In the same way that it's horses for courses with managers, being in the right place at the right time, I fear that Cook is not the right man for this job and how it is developing beyond his experience.

We need to get Khaldoon out in the media far more!

I think we are in agreement, Soulboy. I don't think Cook should be the CEO (or whatever daft title it is that he has). I think he would be good as our marketing and brand manager. Would he accept a step down and would that be politically possible? Unlikely IMO, he would have no authority if he were publicly demoted.

I guess that means he has to go. Dein or Kenyon would be great, particularly Dein, but I don't think we'll get either. It will be interesting to watch developments. Agree that the management structure has too many layers.

I have be roundly ignored for my suggestion that Laporta could and SHOULD be made an offer he simply can't refuse.

Aren't there rumours that he is already being lined up... and part of his demands for the job was that Mancini stayed as manager?

Or have I just dreamt all that stuff up?

Actually come to think of it... I think it was some Italian geezer I'm thinking of!!!

I've got it on pretty good authority that Cook's going nowhere for the foreseeable future and that the owners have the ultimate faith in the Executive set up at City...
