Inverted wingers

Exactly. Two inverted wide players on the same side makes it incredibly narrow and predictable.

You look at where that square is, the very first thing you do is having a full back bombing into that to 1) switch it back with his left foot 2) drag defenders out to come and meet the cross making more space for the forwards. I like Cancelo, he offers more going forward than Walker does. Pep isn’t doing himself any favours playing him on the left.

I agree totally that the inverted winger formation is a big negative in our football at the moment.

When we had Sane and Sterling playing on their correct wings, we created lots of chance from wingers reaching the dead ball line and cutting the ball back. This is much harder to defend than wingers who cut back in to an already crowded park the bus defence. As noted above, Sterling has suffered most from this.

The other thing that has slowed our attack down is playing with two defensive midfielders, instead of one as we did previously. This has resulted in a much tighter defence, but reduces our attacking potential. Now that we have quality centre backs, perhaps it is time to play with only one defensive midfielder again.

To truly be successful you need two footed players who can go outside and cross a ball or cut inside and drive at goal. It’s why Ronaldo was so devastating in his younger years in this role.

Torres could be exciting as he’s quite two footed. We need someone like Mbappe on the right. Or dare I say it, Sancho.

Unfortunately Mahrez is a one trick pony, he plays as an inverted winger and nothing else. Before his arrival Sterling and Sane were so interchangeable and fluid it was a joy to watch. Sterling could rekindle that relationship with the likes of Torres and Foden but whilst Mahrez gets the nod we’re stuck with this predictable way of playing.

When on form, Sterling can and does do both, but he's right out of nick at the moment. Mahrez is truly one footed, the way he gets shown inside is sometimes a parody it's so obvious

Yeah team is unbalanced especially left hand side using two right footers but cancelo probably best bet as it stands just to keep mendy away from the top of table clashes as he's not good enough defensively.
Forden for me on the left as it stands he speeds us up and his direct and the press is better with foden and Jesus up top pressing the opponents. How Mahrez gets starts at the minute is baffling Un less he's in the shop window that's all I can think of why he starts games.

Would have worked perfectly if Mahrez had opened his body and slotted in first time without a defender in sight instead of taking two touches before shooting. It’s not just inverted wingers it’s because the two players in the positions have been out of form for a long time.
