Invisible Man Origin...

the only explanation i ever heard was on a pre-season tour of ireland in the early 90s . in cork i think which is a big rag town cos of the alcoholic dog walker . anyways a couple of bars in the town center got trashed and the police got tipped off about big groups of city fans running riot around town . in fact it was locals doing this and when big groups off city fans were rounded up the chant was somehow born

An unbelievable amount of different theories here.

I'm sticking with my original post.

It may well have been sung at Luton but it's modern day origins are the P&W funeral and our trawl through the divisions.

I went to the Luton game when we were banned and there were hundreds of other Blues there. There was plenty of singing in the pub before and in the ground. I must admit I don't remember the song but I suspect it was sung there.

HOWEVER

I was told it's "rebirth" was at a Prestwich and Whitefield branch do, the funeral of one of the members, where the above version "If you drink, you will die..." etc was sung.

It then caught on when we were in divisions 1 and 2 in the 96-98 era, obviously when we were stood at shitty grounds. I remember it had well caught on by the time we played away at Chesterfield. I remember some used to sing "WE're in Milan watching City in the champions league...we're not really here"

It then kind of morphed into a song used to describe how surreal it was supporting City. The best - and it should have been the final ever - version of it was belted out about 2 minutes before the final whistle at Ewood Park when we got promoted. It had kind of been turned on its head and meant that we couldn't believe we were back so quickly.

Now it's a silly, meaningless song in my opinion.

I've heard it was Luton where it originated, no blues at Millwall let themselves be known, but the funeral revival rings true as distinctly remember verses of

we'll wake up and be in the premier league
We're not really here

when playing at really crap grounds in the old 3rd.

I can remember my brother coming back from that Luton away game saying "could you hear us on the radio singing the Invisible Man song?" and he then taught it to me. Definitely sung at Luton away - Luton had banned away fans and introduced id/membership cards to get in at the time.

And i'm sticking with mine. Late 70's was before the ban at Millwall so chronologically it's the oldest!

I'm not doubting your story, Barry.

i also heard that United sung it when they were banned from all grounds in the mid 70s.

The song was sung in the kippax as far back as the late 70's i can assure you of that. If you want a second opinion then ask Ged Isaacs from KOTK, he used to stand in the same place at the rear of the kippax at the time and it was a good friend of his who used to sing it. So contrary to popular belief it isn't a new thing.

I knew the song had a history to it, I just didn't know what it was...and still dont lol.

The lad who sang it 'Mick' was a bit of a pot head which may explain it's origins. He also sang a cracking alternative of the 'Beer at home is Davenports' jingle for those old enough to remember,it was titled 'Dope at home is cannabis'

Lol, I have met Ged and Mick quite a few times, I will have to ask them about the days at the rear of the Kippax in the 70's when I see them next!

Not seen Mick since i was about 14,a whole 30yrs ago, though i've seen Ged, give him my regards. lol

Oh, another little twist to the Invisiable Man song:

When we played Bournmouth away in the late 90s (Kevin Horlock's aggressive walking game, I think), a load of Blues were looking for a late night drinking hole. The only one they got in was a gay bar.

Blue Peter badge to the person who guesses what the song they sung in the bar was?

I remember that trip Dave. Went with Bill Black and the Levy branch. Remember singing ''We're Not Really Queer'' in one of the bars!!!!!!!!! Also remember propping the hotel bar up at 6 in the morning, chatting shit to the barman, before getting my head down and back on the coach at 8am, I seem to recall!

So between us weve got it!

An old song sung in the 70/80's now and again by a sparse few that was revived by the p&w lot at that chaps funeral and became an athem through so difficult times

Columbo hasnt got shit on us :-)
