Invisible Man Origin...

First remember it being sung in the 90's:
If you drink you will die,
if you dont drink you will die,
so its better to be drunk than be sober when you die,
just like the fans....

along with
we never win at home
and we never win away

I was singing that when Billy McNeill/Jimmy Frizzell were our managers in the mid 80's

I thought it originated when we played Macclesfield away.

Seems from some posts that it was sung before and for different reasons.

I never heard the song before the mid 80's even though I was a regular from the mid 70's.

I first heard it in the Main Stand in the mid 80's. I had a season ticket in H Centre and I distinctly remember it used to make me and my mate laugh when we first heard it. It was one guy in H Left and during quiet periods he would belt it out on his own at the top of his voice. Over the course of a season 2 or 3 of his mates started joining in with him but it didn't catch on straight away.

As I remember over the course of a few seasons it eventually caught on and slowly worked its way to the Kippax via the North Stand.

Given the quality of the football on offer at the time I thought the song was no more than a humorous dig at the dire performances of the team.

My first memory of "we never win at home" being sung en masse was at Goodison in, I think, spring 87, the year we went down. I've a feeling it was a Sunday game. They were gunning for the title and we got a 0-0. I can actually remember someone (paul Stewart I think) crashing one against the bar right in front of us.

The song was sung in the kippax as far back as the late 70's i can assure you of that. If you want a second opinion then ask Ged Isaacs from KOTK, he used to stand in the same place at the rear of the kippax at the time and it was a good friend of his who used to sing it. So contrary to popular belief it isn't a new thing.

+1 remember it being sung late 70`s but as to why I can`t recall

You ain't senn me, right? Fitting it is that its origin eludes.
May it ever be so. The best of typical City.

Mr. I. Man, shortly before two year ban for smoking in the bogs.

Luton away for me too.

We managed to get a load of tks making it out it was a business party being entertained, hit the Red Rock cider in their pub outside the ground beforehand that didn't help mask us being Blues. Somehow managed to avoid being thrown out when we joined in with what was an around the ground rendition of La la la, la la la, la la la City!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seemed like a fair few hundred joined in from their various locations!! Had stewards surround us after that but left us alone!

I was sure it was down to the prestwich and whitefield thing and not any "city fans in away end" story

Id imagine the song may have been sung in the past, hence why a load of blues sang it after a funeral but my understanding was it was the funeral that was 100% the catalyst for it starting to get sung regularly
You are Nearly Correct it Started in the Forresters Pub In Prestwich when we were all out on the pi*s One of our mates had recently Died & one of the lads Started Singing .If you Drink you will Die .If you Dont Drink you will Die .It Better to Be Drunk Than be Sober When you Die .Just Like the fan from the Invisible man ect Don Price Bill Black & Co then went on to Sing it on Tour in Ireland & for some daft Reason it caught on from there & the first bit over time got dropped

There's previously been a thread on this about 3 years ago but I agree with Don, the Ireland tour (what a fucking trip that was!) with the P/W and Levvy lads really got it going. I never heard it sung at games before that but it was the season after when it took off. It's a pity the full song is never sung these days.

Was penultimate away game of 86/87 season that one DD,was a Saturday,West Ham when we went down being the last and us relegated, chased Utd all over town that day when come back from Goodison and then 2 different groups of City fighting with each other outside Burger King in Picc Gdns, think it might have been the Wimpy then for our older viewers
