iOS 5! Anyone else excited ??

The reason why Bluemoon doesn't have an iPhone app is solely down to me absolutely desperately trying to not spunk all that money on a Mac for the production of a single app.

You see, Apple makes it nigh on impossible to develop for the iPhone/iPad/Mac unless you are physically on a Mac. Say what you want about Microsoft, but you can target their platforms from anywhere. Hell, even when I'm building on a Linux based OS, I still would rather ignore Mac than go through the hoops necessary to target it.
Be honest. You don't have to try very hard do you?

Just for fun:

You lot are mad, what happened to ringing your mates on a phone and listening to a track on an ipod? Damocles, I have an iphone 4 cos they dont make a phone that is just a phone anymore. I can listen to music on my ipod nano and call people on the phone. The calculator, calander etc all work.
You sound like a mega nerd (no offense) but I dont think there are many sparks at our place worrying about the stuff you are worrying about.

Damocles, never one to shy away from his sense of superiority and "individuality."

To answer the OP question. Yes, its a pretty good update and improves the usability of the OS and adds some nice features.

I couldnt give a toss about how hard it is to develop for, because at the end of the day I just use the end product.

Are you mad? It isn't a sense of superiority and individuality to call out the biggest marketing success of the past 20 years. Apple aren't leaders in technology and they haven't been since the days of Apple II. Woz admits it himself; that's one of the reasons why he left, he didn't think that Apple was engineering software/hardware any more but was "marketeering" software.

I apologise if echoing the views of most engineers, including the one who literally built Apple as a company, comes across to you as "individuality".

Seriously, some people are just looking to have a pop today.

So do other phones that don't cost the amount of an iPhone and many of them implement it better.

Also, I'm not a mega-nerd, I'm an engineer who has to deal with the various mobile platforms on a near daily basis, either by developing software directly on them, or developing web applications that will be used on them. This is my job; it's how I make a living. This is a field that I'm bothered about, because I work inside of it and have to deal with its problems ALL OF THE TIME.

Im sorry and Im sure ALL Iphone 4 users will agree, Apple is by far superior to any Android phone on the market. FACT!
Which isn't a bias selection at all.

Also it isn't a fact.
Techradar have the iPhone 4 in 5th place on the list of 20 best mobile phones behind the Galaxy S2, Sony Experia Arc, HTC Desire S & HTC Incredible.

A big leap there.

You're gonna take a technical, usability and value analysis over the opinion of an Apple user?

I've had both and it really isnt. My missus thinks the iphone is better though but she can just about switch a computer on and has only just worked out how to play blurays on the PS3 (after 3 years). She's far from stupid, just not very good with technology, which imo sums up your average apple customer.

I do have 2 ipods, they are no better than other hardware on the market but they do look nice sat in their docking station and I think the mac monitor looks the business but I wouldn't swap if for a pc.

iOS 5 - Not excited but I am sure that it will make my iPhone a little better.

I love the Apple vs Everything else debates.

I have an iPhone and a MacBook and yes they work great. Easy to use and one year in my Mac runs like it did the day I got it.

Now others will say I could of got a same spec laptop much cheaper and that if I looked after it and ran this, that and the other it would still perform. The problem is I don't want to spend my time running various programs to keep my computer happy. I want to spend that time looking at naked ladies :). The point is that for me my Mac just works, I don't care how it works but it does. I don't care how hard Apple make programming and I don't care that people think I like Radiohead (I don't).

It is all down to personal preference and what works for you. Is my iPhone 4 the best phone in the world? To me yes, to my gf no she loves her blackberry and to my mate no because he loves his HTC (fool!). Some hate the OS on mac, some find it simple and easy to use. For me it's easy to use and for me that it what matters, windows (not tried anything else) just seems to make things harder and why anyone wants a product that makes what you want to do hard baffles me. And I guess the same point is why programmers seem to hate Macs - they make it harder for them...... or maybe they aren't smart enough ;)

This is a nutshell fuck off apple and you're minions that follow you. Thick bastards.

Haha, excellent, I like that analogy.

I have never once bought an Apple product of any kind. Why? Not because of some kind of illogical hatred for Apple and its users, but because when I pay hundreds of pounds for something I research what I'm getting for my money before I buy.

Doing this research leads me to the same conclusion every time. You can get something that does everything an Apple product does, but cheaper, somewhere else. The only thing that separates Macs and iPhones are the people that use them having more money than sense. That and the fact their products have this 'quality feel' which makes them nice to navigate and look at but in terms of substance add nothing in terms of practicality. Some people are willing to pay for that, but I'm not, I want some substance for my hard earned.

Just playing devils advocate, but what about the touch screen stuff they've patented? They must have been the first to do that to be able to patent it?

These kind of threads are always funny, we've got one guy saying "Apple iz teh best. FACT" which is complete bollocks, then we've got others saying "Apple iz teh shi1est lolz" which is also bollocks.

There's more to marketing than a fancy campaign, especially in this day and age of consumer awareness, you need something, even if its part smoke and mirrors, you still need 'something' to garner repeat business.

-- 07 Jun 2011, 20:33 --

surely usability adds to practicality?

You buy luxury goods to enjoy them, which is probably why Apple are successful, they've created products people seem to enjoy using.

Give me a basic spec acer netbook i can work, over the most powerful desktop PC in the world which takes 2 years to understand the sequence to turn the thing on.

Tpuchscreen technology has been around since the 60s. IBM were inventing touchscreen computers in the 70s, even Sega tried it in the 90s.

Apple own patents on multi-touch. This is because they bought the company who invented it. Even this is disputed, Microsoft had Surface out 5 years before the iPhone and other companies such as Mitsubishi developed multi-touch hardware 10 years ago.

These patents will never be enforced, because Apple aren't stupid enough to fight it in court, as they will quite plainly lose. They aren't worth the bandwidth it takes to deliver the webpage informing you of the patent.
