Apple aren't leaders in technology and they haven't been since the days of Apple II.

Just playing devils advocate, but what about the touch screen stuff they've patented? They must have been the first to do that to be able to patent it?

Tpuchscreen technology has been around since the 60s. IBM were inventing touchscreen computers in the 70s, even Sega tried it in the 90s.

Apple own patents on multi-touch. This is because they bought the company who invented it. Even this is disputed, Microsoft had Surface out 5 years before the iPhone and other companies such as Mitsubishi developed multi-touch hardware 10 years ago.

These patents will never be enforced, because Apple aren't stupid enough to fight it in court, as they will quite plainly lose. They aren't worth the bandwidth it takes to deliver the webpage informing you of the patent.

Continuing to be an arse (sorry i mean play devils advocate)

Why didn't Micosoft patent/utilise multitouch? And why haven't other companies just used it and waited for the court case?

They did, there's differing types of multitouch and everybody owns the patent on a different one. I can't recall the names to be honest, but it's something like adaptive multitouch, capacitive multitouch, etc.

Anyway, people have used multitouch. Lots of them, Apple products aren't the only multitouch products in the world.

I'm neither an apple lover or hater, but they do seem to release these new features as some sort of technological breakthrough.

For example, in iOS5 there is iMessaging. Been available in Blackberry for yonks, there is various 3rd party apps for iphone, android etc. Apple just seem so far behind but then when they do introduce something, its a world beater. Multi-tasking another example.

Still, if people pay there money then whats stopping them.

Oh, and I fucking hate iTunes.

iCloud.

YOU MEAN I CAN SAVE MY DOCUMENTS ONLINE? FUCKING SIGN ME UP! REVOLUTIONARY!
This is not what cloud is and you know it. I use MobileMe right now but Icloud will be a smoother iteration of an integrated storage system. When I make corrections to documents on my way to meetings using my iPhone I will be able to open them on my MacBook in the meeting without having to have done anything but save them. It's not revolutionary but it is the most integrated cross platform system for non tech users.

The new software looks absolutly awesome, cant wait for it to come out!

Apple are streets ahead of Android!

No they aren't. Not technologically at least. iOS is quite simply the worst platform to develop on, on the planet, and people only do so because they are forced into it by the popularity of Apple's products; solely due to their marketing campaigns and hipster wankers buying their substandard products to try and fulfil their miserable consumer whore lives.

I can't think of a single Apple product that even approaches been "good", let alone "great".

\O/

I think I love you ;-)

That and the fact their products have this 'quality feel' which makes them nice to navigate and look at but in terms of substance add nothing in terms of practicality. Some people are willing to pay for that, but I'm not, I want some substance for my hard earned.

surely usability adds to practicality?

You buy luxury goods to enjoy them, which is probably why Apple are successful, they've created products people seem to enjoy using.

Give me a basic spec acer netbook i can work, over the most powerful desktop PC in the world which takes 2 years to understand the sequence to turn the thing on.

You can argue that yes, definitely, but is it worth the huge gap in price? Not to mention the restrictions on certain things (i.e. lack of flash player, USB drive etc.). I don't see that it is, but then that's where I differ to people who buy these things.

I take your point that Apple have created products that people enjoy using. There are members of my family that feel that it's more the 'experience' that differentiates it rather than any particular application.

Like I say it depends on how you want to spend your money. On things that feel good to use, or things that are more useful. I feel that's what it comes down to.

Also the social 'feel-good factor' attached to Apple products is an undeniable truth. It's like designer labels on clothes, you don't buy them because they're better than other products which look exactly the same, you buy it for your social reputation.

You mean it's Google Documents/Dropbox/SkyDrive/a billion other things but with less features and more branding.

Also, cross platform doesn't mean "will work with all Apple systems". My soul died a little when you referred to it as that.

Only poor people don't like Apple products.
They prefer to dig round the bargain bins for things that are cheaper but "do the same job as Apple".
They don't mind that they spend countless days tweaking and tinkering to get it to do the same thing that Apple products do just by switching them on. Got to do something when you are on the dole!
Even when the thing crashes and loses their poor persons data, they don't mind.....the thought they saved money keeps them happy inside.
It's the same with their none Apple APPs. They must love looking at the frozen screens, as it reminds them of those paintings rich people have hanging on their homes.
It also doesn't bother them when a APP doesn't close properly and drains the battery.
Oh the fun they have recharging the phone......highlight of their poverty stricken day.

Then comes the boasting how they have saved the mighty 59p by having an android phone.
Stopped those greedy developers eating that day eh?
And how much better the specs are. Poor fools don't realize that no phone lens on the planet can resolve greater that 5/6 megs, and only means poor low light response and stupidly large files sizes. But biggers better right?
And then there's the type who just gets bored and wants something different.
They should avoid the iPhone, because it is soooo boring.
I mean, you just use the thing, and everything is easy to find and figure out.
You just know you need animated "Tiles" whilst the phone is in your pocket right?
Everybody knows a battery is for using, so anything that's depletes it quicker has to be a good thing.

Ok joking aside!

It occurs to me the only people who don't like Apple haven't really used the products.
Yes they are restrictive, and yes they are expensive. Yes you can get better specs for less money.
But what you do get is stability, and something that just works.....all day every day.
It is the little things that make a difference. I hated browsing the web on a phone until i tried the iPhones "pinch/squeeze flick up/down" thing....brilliant. (now every phone uses it)
Then there is MobileMe. Tried all sorts of programs/phones to get all my contacts/calendars/data to share between home and the wife's phone.
Some would work for a while, then I would have to spend days trying to fix and resync things.
With MobileMe, it all just worked and has ever since.
The Apple App store IS leading the way. Apple restrictiveness is actually a strength here.
Because money actually gets back to the developers instead of the pirates, more Apps are getting made.
Also with the testing required, they tend to have less bugs and work better too.

At the end of the day it all comes down to time versus money.
Apple care is second to none. Try getting Sony to even admit their products have a problem let alone getting them to fix it.
Apple looks expensive until you add up how much time reliable software/hardware saves you.
I have lost weeks tracking down software problems in the past.
Forgetting the valuable time, the frustration saved is priceless.

So peasants, say you will avoid Apple products if you want, but we all know it's because you are poor and cannot afford it really!...;)

Ps
Thank you Apple for bringing out iOS 5 and making MobileMe free.
Just got my email informing me of my free period until the new software is released. (saves me £89 a year!)

Your point has just been proven.

I hope that wasn't aimed at me. If your none Apple device will allow you to read the whole post without freezing, I actually stated all Apple products are expensive and restrictive.
But after trying the rest, best spec and features doesn't always mean the best to use.
Most other products have started treating their customers like free beta testers.
Fixing the bugs on the next product cycle, leaving the original owners stranded.

Im sorry and Im sure ALL Iphone 4 users will agree, Apple is by far superior to any Android phone on the market. FACT!

I've had both and it really isnt. My missus thinks the iphone is better though but she can just about switch a computer on and has only just worked out how to play blurays on the PS3 (after 3 years). She's far from stupid, just not very good with technology, which imo sums up your average apple customer.

I do have 2 ipods, they are no better than other hardware on the market but they do look nice sat in their docking station and I think the mac monitor looks the business but I wouldn't swap if for a pc.
So true, apple make things so much easier to use than the other products on the Market, There are better phones out there than the iphone4 but there so easy to use compared to some of the other smart phones.

Ok, I'll ignore the inanity of all of that because you said you were joking. Now I'm going to tell you why everything else you have just said is rubbish.

It occurs to me the only people who don't like Apple haven't really used the products.

Really? I've owned an Apple product since about 1989. That includes everything from an Apple IIgs all the way through to 2008 when I gave up with them. I had the pre-Intel Macs, developed on every system from Cheetah onwards and have extensively used iPhones, iPods and iMacs.

Yes they are restrictive, and yes they are expensive. Yes you can get better specs for less money.
But what you do get is stability, and something that just works.....all day every day.

My Windows 7 installation works ALL of the time. So does my Linux install. I don't have to do any fiddling about. I don't think I've ever done anything with my MP3 player apart from plug it straight into my computer, transfer music onto it and press the play button. My phone has never broken, never fails to do what I want.

It is the little things that make a difference. I hated browsing the web on a phone until i tried the iPhones "pinch/squeeze flick up/down" thing....brilliant. (now every phone uses it)

Yes, they nicked that from Microsoft Surface, which was doing it about 5 years earlier.

Then there is MobileMe. Tried all sorts of programs/phones to get all my contacts/calendars/data to share between home and the wife's phone.
Some would work for a while, then I would have to spend days trying to fix and resync things.
With MobileMe, it all just worked and has ever since.

Eh? So you're surprised that an APPLE PROGRAM is better at synching data from APPLE PROGRAMS than PROGRAMS NOT MADE BY APPLE when Apple refuses to make an API available?

The Apple App store IS leading the way. Apple restrictiveness is actually a strength here.
Because money actually gets back to the developers instead of the pirates, more Apps are getting made.
Also with the testing required, they tend to have less bugs and work better too.

This is so laughable than I'm going to mainly ignore it, you've just shown that you don't know what you're talking about. I'm a developer, I've first hand experience with the App Store; you're blatantly wrong. The one thing that I will say, is that LESS developers are developing apps year on year as Andriod increases market penetration. When Microsoft finally bothers to announce that they've bought Nokia, this will slip far lower as Symbian is replaced by Windows Phone. Go and ask jwz about Apple's App Store.

At the end of the day it all comes down to time versus money.

Not really, I work seven days a week and make a damn good living. I'm still not buying Apple products because they are badly engineered rubbish that is done better by other companies.

Apple care is second to none. Try getting Sony to even admit their products have a problem let alone getting them to fix it.

The funny thing is, you keep winking and everything but we're aware that this is what you actually believe. I'm nowhere near poor, am always extremely busy and still don't want an Apple. This is mainly because I'm not an idiot and don't believe in throwing money at shit.

Do you wank over photos of Steve Jobs?
Why do you? Suppose you prefer Bill Gates?
....behave and go have a beer or something :(

They prefer to dig round the bargain bins for things that are cheaper but "do the same job as Apple".
They don't mind that they spend countless days tweaking and tinkering to get it to do the same thing that Apple products do just by switching them on. Got to do something when you are on the dole!

The funny thing is, you keep winking and everything but we're aware that this is what you actually believe. I'm nowhere near poor, am always extremely busy and still don't want an Apple. This is mainly because I'm not an idiot and don't believe in throwing money at shit.

Ps

They are now not charging you for something that others have implemented better for free previously. Well done.
Just another point, the Android market encourages young/amateur developers to learn/try their hand at mobile apps, which they can build for little capital, and have the opportunity to distribute them freely to gain feedback/reputation.

Apple, from my experience, has alienated a whole generation of developers, which in 10-15 years will bite them on the arse.

That's a good point too. As silly as this sounds, even if they have a Mac, the fee to get into their Developer Community ($100 every year) is just too big for some college students.

Compare this with Android, which is built in student's favourite language of Java, has a great SDK, is free to join and is actively supported.

Then compare this with Windows Phone SDK, which comes free with XNA Developers Kit as the central part of their new Game Studio package, has superb tutorials and again, is free to join. the Windows marketplace will only get better as it goes, though it isn't great t present.

Damocies

You want me to drop the smilies? OK
I'm not wealthy if that makes you happy?
It's easy for people to have a dig on here if anybody even mentions money "must be a rag" etc.
Therefore I lampooned that point...

So your a developer, so how does that effect "my" perpective of a product?

The App store is easy to access, and all the content is there. The Andriod market was/is a complete mess. Without one person to give it direction, nothing can ever develop properly.
So as a developer you are happy that some of my mates are using your software for free?

The fact that you used Apple in the past doesn't mean present day products are the same.
I avoided the iPhone like the plague until the 3GS came out. Too me, it was the first iPhone that actually worked.
It doesn't matter if MS first mentioned pinch and squeeze, Apple actually put it to good use.

I have a full blown PC, and have been building them since my first ZX81.
I still use a PC and don't plan on changing to a iMac any time soon.
The PC has given me grief over the years, but in general it is ok.
I now use a iPad to browse the net of an evening. I actually got it for the kids as there are some great educational Apps. But to my surprise, it is proving more useful than I would have imagined.
It's the Apps that makes the product. So if the Apps go elsewhere, so will I.
You waffle on about young developers not being supported. How's that my business?
If in ten years Apple have gone bump, I will choose what ever is best for my needs then.
At the moment, everybody is bringing out apple Apps.

Then you knock MobileMe. After countless weeks/months trying to get my Sony Experia X1 to retrieve emails and sync with my explorer calendar, I gave up.
Even when I got my iPhone, people advised me how to avoid paying for MobileMe by using google Apps.
Got it all working for nearly two days straight. Spent another month trying to figure out how I wiped all my data/contacts appointments.
I paid to just make my life easier. It was worth every single penny...to me.
It is now free. What's wrong with that?

You see we are not all developers who know everything about programs.
Not all people get pleasure decoding and debugging systems.
My mates got a cracking new phone that pisses all over my iPhone 4.
Bigger screen, and higher mega pixel camera. Faster processor and he can view flash he told me.
He is looking forward to using ripped software for nothing, and cannot see the point of my phone.
He kept phoning me asking how to do things. He is also getting annoyed with the phone freezing. He also doesn't understand why his battery is running down faster and faster each day.(it reminded me of my Experia days)
I had a look and he was running everything at once. I reset the phone, and left him too it.
All was great until I asked him to demo a few basic functions. Turns out that although the phone has all these great features, he has no idea how to find or use them.
I have NEVER had to show anybody how to use a iPhone.
So yes it is cheesy to say you like any thing Apple, but it is purely down to being happy with what I've got and how it works.
Not a fanboy, just a happy customer.( I must a be a Rag eh)

Damocles that has to be one of the best posts ever! (Won't quote it as enough people have already).

Apple are one of the most morally bankrupt companies that I can think of, in that they like to make out that they are an 'innovator', always 'ahead of the game' or 'doing things for you'. Instead, they overcharge for a product, and then lock you in and make it so you almost have to buy further products from them to get the features that you want (or are made to want....it's a dark art that they have perfected in recent times).
Luckily for them they have also perfected the art of marketing so most people see this as a good thing.

Macs.....I had a MacBook pro and was left very unimpressed by it to be honest.
As I was paying a premium price I expected a product that would behave in a way that reflected this price point - this was definitely not the case as it could not even perform simple tasks, such as watching a video on the mcfc.co.uk site without crashing. I have since sold the MacBook to buy brother and replaced it with a cheap £350 laptop which has NEVER had an issue with any task.
Don't get me wrong, they are useful ofcourse, but they are not as all powerful as many people say they are.

iPads - I actually would like one of those to be honest, but won't get one as a primary factor would be internet browsing, and yet again this would be a half hearted experience due to there being NO flash.

With regards to iPhones..... I love the fact that you have to:
*Pay a higher monthly contract
*Pay a fee for the Phone in the first place (almost all 'normal' non apple phones are free on contract).
*Can't get a signal (I never have signal issues, yet my friends at work consistently *have days without signal despite us working in the same room and being on the *same network.....guess who has a HTC DesireHD & not an iPhone 3gs or 4?!)
*Even if you can get a signal you can't see half the things you want to due to not being able to display flash!
*Have to pay through the teeth for an app that is either free or minimal cost on Android.

One of the apple 'fanboys' above mentioned that they pay for apps on itunes as if it was some kind of badge of honour, or that by paying £0.59 was giving something back to the developer......you do know how much apple themselves make from each app download, right??

If Google/Android sort out the app market with some stricter self regulation (obviously not as high as apple!!!!) to try and weed out the more useless apps then they will cement there position as number 1 in the market. They already control over 50% of smartphone sales in USA so the hardware/market penetration battle is already on the way to success.

Windows Phone (with Nokia especially) will soon make a real go of things though, and I imagine that they will be best placed in a few years to be either the number 1 player or a close second - they seem to have a balance between the 'large corporate' way of doing things, whilst also allowing the little guys to be involved too.

iPhone, eventually, will become more of a niche product.

Things aren't cool or in fashion for ever, and this really is the
The iPhone's only real usp is that it is 'cool'. Once they are seen to be normal or uncool (which must be in the next year or 2) they will be seen as just another phone and then there will be no social/fashionable reason to buy one.

Things aren't cool or in fashion for ever, that's the very nature of the beast.
