Iranian General killed by US Drone.

Iran has excelled at assymetric warfare over the last few years and Suleimani wasa large part of that. They wouldn't attack the US or Israel directly but would hit things like oil installations in the Gulf, Jewish community facilities, US tourists or tourist attractions in the US possibly.

On the other hand the Iranian leadership also know that the majority of the Iranian population would be happy see the back of them. They've suffered enough under the sanctions regime and most couldn't give a fuck about exporting revolution but just want a decent standard of living and a reasonable government.

So if we send in Nigel Farage there is a chance he could convince the populace to take out their leadership.

Would the Russians be happy if them and the US gave the Iranian people the tools for a "democratic revolution"?

There's some truth in that but it's not the fault of the West that, for instance, Sunni's hate Shia's (& vice versa) or that the various tribes fought and killed each other for dominance, when oil wasn't a thing.
And still do.

In one breath the "west" backs the Sunni Saudi's against the Shia element in Yemen, whilst backing the Shia element against the Sunni IS etc in Iraq and Syria for the last 5 or so years.

Argue all what you want guys. It's all about the money. It's what makes the world spin.
The yanks are the biggest producer of guns and military shit they love it.
They even sold weapons to the Iranians....maybe no more but Money talks lads.

They certainly sell loads to the Saudi’s and this ain’t going to see those orders dry up anytime soon.

I think there may be a few twitchy high ranking Iranians driving around in the next few months too!

Absolutely right, the media have shown the rentamob protests today against this fella's death, but they didn't bother to show much of the millions who've been protesting (and in many cases died or been injured) against their government in the last few weeks.

I've mentioned it before but I was in a Lebanese restaurant about 5 years ago when I overheard a conversation between an arms manufacturer and a white house insider. The latter was bemoaning that Obama wasn't going to attack Iran and the businessman agreed that a change of President might be better for business. The matter of fact tone of the conversation was like the goods for sale were washing machines rather than Brimstone missiles.

I agree with the Shia Sunni point although I should say that during the post war period the West's main concern was with socialism in the area under Nasser. At that point religious fundamentalism was a minority interest.
Certainly today's events will not have improved things.
Perversely, sometimes it takes something shocking and overt to bring people to their senses. This proxy war has been going on since the second Iraq War and verty little has been said or done, bar Trump pulling out of the nuclear deal. Now it's coming into the open properly.

If you've read The Looming Tower, it gives a history of Islamic fundamentalism, starting with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, the rise of people like Bin Laden and Al Zawahiri and how they fused the military prowess of the Mujihadeen with their ideology, to form organisations like Al Qaeda and ISIS. It was a minority interest but a powerful one and it really came into being when the Russians invaded Afghanistan. Initially the Afghans and other fighters held the Arabs in contempt, as they were only to happy to be martyrs, without any thought for guerilla or standard military tactics. But as the Arabs learned that it was often better to stay alive as long as possible, the Afghans & Central Asian fighters learned fundamentalism.
