He was played 'out of position' (ie - he wasn't played in the one role he likes and sometimes performs well in) so was largely shit.

Look, Stephen Ireland is quality in that role.
But he's not good enough to have a top team built around him in that role, so unless your aspirations are mid table he's a bit pointless unless you have the perfect mix of players.

Absolutely perfect assessment.
Ireland is good and can be brilliant - but he's not at the level of Fabregas.
